Placement Take Up

Percentage Placement Take Up by School

Percentage Placement Take Up of the Major Ethnic Groups Note: Less than one in three Asian background students enrolled on a sandwich degree do a placement.

Ethnic Backgrounds of Final Year Students on Sandwich Degrees

Gender Comparisons

Asian Backgrounds

Conclusions Each School has its own approach to work placements. Most Schools have placement office(s). Academics lead the process in some schools, and support it in others. Fewer than 50% of students enrolled on sandwich courses are taking a placement year. Students from ethnic minority backgrounds are less likely than white students to go on placement.

Anecdotal Evidence Mobility – The majority of students want a placement within daily travelling distance e.g. Yorkshire or Greater Manchester. – Placements abroad are taken by a small minority. – A substantial minority of students are not prepared to travel out of Huddersfield Availability – A few placements are exclusive to Huddersfield, most are in competition with other Universities. – For students with business or generic skills there are more placements than students. – Specialist courses struggle to find placements e.g. Music technology. – Students can be ‘picky’ about placements.

DISABILITY AND PLACEMENTS

Placement Take Up Placement - YesPlacement - No Overall placement take up is consistent

Placements and Disabilities Placement - NoPlacement - Yes Similar numbers of students have dyslexia. Only students with certain disabilities took placements in the sample year. Note: relatively small sample.
