Pattern of the Hard- Boiled Introduction to the Hard Boiled Style

The Formula Classical detective stories focus less on apprehension and more on explanation Hard-boiled ends with the detective/criminal confrontation – Personal involvement of the detective on a moral & emotional level – The detective is forced to define his own concept of morality and justice Frequently in contrast with the police (too corrupt to hand out proper judgment)

Classical vs. Hard-boiled Detective

Classical vs. Hard-boiled intro

So Confusing! The initial mission = smoke screen for another more devious plot Supposed victim = villain Lover = murderess Faithful friend = rotten betrayer The police, DA, and often the client try to halt the investigation Seemingly respectable/successful people = members of a gang

Pattern of Action 1.The detective is called to investigate a seemingly simple case 2.His investigation comes up against a web of conspiracy that reflects the presence of a hidden criminal organization 3.The track leads back to the rich and respectable levels of society and exposes the corrupt relationship between the pillars of community and the criminal underground.
