Getting started What to do first when you are looking for a new job/career? Write down what you are passionate about and what you would love to do for work Take inventory of your skills/core competencies and write them down Write down any character attributes and other assets you would bring to a job/employer Research the jobs and/or fields you are interested in Google search Job postings (not to apply to) Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS.org) Ascertain what the job requirements are and what companies are looking for Start to match your skills and other attributes to specific jobs/careers Don’t set barriers for yourself Resume development Resume should be written to highlight your accomplishments and attributes that will be important to an employer Summary VS Objective Make yourself relevant Differentiate yourself from the pack Photo/No photo
Branding your resume
Plan of attack (Finding the Job) Pick the companies (no more than 20 to start) you want to target Why do you want to target them What can you do for them What can they do for you Research the company and the employees (especially management) Read bio’s of the executive team if they exist Search LinkedIn for connections Anything in common with anyone at the company (personal/professional) Connect through a connection if possible Don’t send your resume from a job board! Cover letters can be effective or Hand-written
The Interview Process Show samples of your work (Demonstrating your exp and Brand) Projects you worked on Community service work Something else you are proud of that may be transferrable knowledge Listen and respond thoughtfully to questions Don’t rush through answers Speak clearly and confidently (know what you know) Don’t ramble on into other areas not part of the question Have your questions to ask Don’t tell interviewers what you think they want to hear Be honest in your responses and true to who you are Don’t be afraid to ask interviewer to further explain a question Don’t make something up when you’re unsure of what was asked Ask for the job! Follow up is key!
