Clozapine Antipsychotic Your medication

Clozapine What is this leaflet for? This leaflet is to help you understand more about your medicine. Your medicine could look different to the pictures on this leaflet. Clozapine is also called Clozaril and Zaponex. Clozapine is available as tablets and liquid. What is Clozapine used for? Clozapine is commonly used to treat Schizophrenia. It is used when patients have not responded to other antipsychotics.

Clozapine What will Clozapine do? Clozapine should help you feel calm and relaxed. It could take some time for Clozapine to have its full effect. What are the side effects of Clozapine? Side effects are the unwanted effects of any medicine on the body. Not everyone taking a medicine will get side effects. Many side effects will go away with time. But some side effects may last for longer. Some side effects can be serious. You should tell your doctor if you have any side effect.

Clozapine What are the side effects of Clozapine? Changes in blood cells feeling dizzy increase in salivation feeling restless stiffness in arms or legs feeling sleepy or sluggish increase in weight changes in blood sugar level changes in cholesterol levels changes in heart function rash or feeling itchy You will need to have the following tests if you are taking Clozapine : Blood tests: which will be done weekly for first 18 weeks, every 2 weeks for 1 year and then every 4 weeks. Clozapine How and when to take Clozapine? The label on your Clozapine packet should tell you when and how much you should take. What else can help? Eating healthy Doing some exercises. Participating in activities that you like. If you forget to take the tablet Tell your carer or doctor straight away. When to stop taking Clozapine? You should carry on taking your medicine unless your doctor asks you to stop.

Clozapine Some medicines do not work well together. You should tell your doctor about any other medicines you are taking. What should not be done while taking Clozapine? Drinking alcohol when on Clozapine could make you feel drowsy. Doctor’s comments +

Clozapine It is best not to take anti psychotics when you are pregnant. It is best not to take anti psychotics when you are breast feeding your baby. If you need to take anti psychotics when you are pregnant or breast feeding you can have Olanzapine or Sulpiride which are safer.
