DISTRICT THEME: “LEADERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE”

NAVIGATE TO MY ROTARY "It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.” Leonardo Da Vinci

SUPPORTING ROTARY’S STRATEGIC PLAN

INTENTIONAL VS. ACCIDENTAL STRATEGIES

An Intentional Strategy…. A specific course of action likely to achieve the desired result Examples??

NAVIGATE TO MY ROTARY "Hope is not a strategy” Beth Padgett

THE PRESIDENT’S ROLE – The Club Visionary What will the club look like in 10 years? 5 years? 3 years? At the end of my term as President? For what will my year as President be remembered? How can I leave the campground in better shape than I found it?

EVERYONE ELSE’S ROLE – Promoting, Supporting and Executing The Club Vision Plans Strategies Activities/Action Items Stewardship

THE CLUB LEADERS’ ROLE You are the front line of the army fighting Rotary's biggest enemy COMPLACENCY

CHALLENGING THE STATUS QUO “ is that step backwards between successful and failing” Pete Campbell Mad Men Stable

CHALLENGING THE STATUS QUO – Let’s do better than Status Quo – Membership – The Rotary Foundation – Service Projects – Sustainability

MEMBERSHIP CHALLENGE – If your club is over 25 members: Grow your club by 10 members Or 10% – If your club is below 25 members Grow to 25 members If you’re below 15 members, close the gap between where you are and 25 members by HALF

CLUB LEADERS – Thought Leaders – Attitudes, Club Culture Inspiration Encouragement Example Motivation

SO, WHAT MOTIVATES PEOPLE? Incentives??

SO, WHAT MOTIVATES PEOPLE? Link to Dan Pink Drive video

SO, WHAT MOTIVATES PEOPLE?

KEYS TO MEMBER RETENTION & ATTRACTION – Autonomy People want to be part of something that’s self-governing – Purpose People want to be part of something meaningful – an organization that’s making a difference – Mastery People want to be part of something that’s as good as any and better than most at what it does

QUESTIONS… – Autonomy?? – Purpose?? Does your club actually DO enough to keep its members engaged in its Purpose? Is its Purpose clearly part of the President’s vision? – Mastery?? Is your club actually working at mastering its game? Does your club have an idea of what mastery looks like?

MASTERY – A truly effective Rotary club is one that: 1.Sustains or increases its membership base 2.Implements successful projects that address the needs of its community and communities in other countries 3.Supports the Rotary Foundation through both program participation and financial contributions 4.Develops future club leaders capable of serving in Rotary beyond the club Mike Thacker PDG D-7710

EXPECTATIONS – Promote and expect Mutual Respect among Rotarians We’re all volunteers Please don't let your procrastination or lack of responsiveness require another volunteer to spend time following up with you Please grant me the time I’m willing to grant you

MEMBERSHIP GROWTH

MEMBERSHIP CHALLENGE – If your club is over 25 members: Grow your club by 10 members Or 10% – If your club is below 25 members Grow to 25 members If you’re below 15 members, close the gap between where you are and 25 members by HALF

MEMBERSHIP PROFILES Endangered Species? Years

MEMBERSHIP PROFILES Endangered Species Years

MEMBERSHIP PROFILES Endangered Species Years

MEMBERSHIP PROFILES Game Over Years

LOSS of SUSTAINABILITY – Slip below critical mass of ~ 20 members – From 18 to 16 to 14 – Don’t realize what’s happening – Meetings of members = Trouble attracting speakers – Trouble attracting new members – Trouble executing meaningful projects – Nobody wants to be President the third time – Aging out together – many of these same clubs have few members under 50 – At members, 1 or 2 key players are holding the club together – Something happens to one of those -- Lights out Fact: Of the 10 clubs in D-7750 with the largest % membership loss this year, NINE are under 25 members. A NET LOSS of THIRTY members
