Pelosi Boot Camp: Hawaii YDA Pacific 2015

1 IDENTIFY YOUR CALL TO SERVICE TEN years DOZENS of CAMPAIGN BOOT CAMPs 40 states and 3 foreign countries HUNDREDS of candidates THOUSANDS of volunteers … ONE fundamental question: What is your CALL TO SERVICE - YOUR MESSAGE TO THE FUTURE? Pelosi Boot Camp: Hawaii YDA Pacific 2015

IDENTIFY YOUR CALL TO SERVICE  “We the People …” Our call to service as Americans and as Democrats  Articulate your VISION IDEAS, and VALUES  Commit to sending your MESSAGE to the FUTURE  Look to your HOME & family ethic that you manifest in community  A call is not an issue – it’s your TOUCHSTONE of inspiration & strength  REFLECT upon your applications, writings, bio: define goals & values  ANSWER with COURAGE: get outside your comfort zone & take risks  Don’t Just BE Something– DO Something! Vote, mentor, assist, produce  INNOVATE: Challenge “The Way We Do Things” Mentality of Inertia  EAT, SLEEP, EXERCISE, and HALT to maintain stamina  Remember: CRITICISM & Effectiveness Go Hand in Hand Pelosi Boot Camp: Hawaii YDA Pacific 2015

WOMEN OVERCOME STEEPER ODDS CLIMBING DOUBLE STAIR (triple stair if woman of color/LGBT). POLITICS: <10% heads of state; 15% parliament members BUSINESS: <20% corp CEOs/top mgrs 20% nonprofit CEOs/top mgrs PARENTS: 2/3 to 1/3 married dad mgrs to married mom mgrs THE ONLY 1: absent critical mass, the only woman is marginalized CONFRONTING STEREOTYPES. Gender bias is real. Face it and tell it. SINGLE? You can’t attract ‘em MARRIED? You should put ‘em over career KIDS? You should stay home with ‘em DIVORCED?You couldn’t keep ‘em WIDOWED?You killed ‘em Pelosi Boot Camp: Hawaii YDA Pacific 2015

2 DEFINE YOUR MESSAGE   What is your MESSAGE?  MESSAGE BOX: compare your message with opponents & inertia  Who are your ALLIES, ALUMNI & AMBASSADORS?  What MEDIA strategies are MESSAGE multipliers?  Who is spending MONEY for or against you?  What MOBILIZATION metrics can test your message? Pelosi Boot Camp: Hawaii YDA Pacific 2015

3 KNOW YOUR COMMUNITY  PEOPLE: population  JOBS: employers & small businesses, natsec  SCHOOLS: preK through post graduate  GEOGRAPHY: nature & infrastructure  POLITICS: elected officials  STRUGGLES: barricades (have you been?)  TRADITIONS: culture & civic events  GUT CHECK: Do you know people’s dreams, and challenges? Does your vision of a Democratic future help them? you win? Pelosi Boot Camp: Hawaii YDA Pacific 2015

4 BUILD LEADERSHIP TEAMS  ORGANIZE people around a shared vision, work in a disciplined way & build a culture of service  Each member of the team is an ambassador for all  Diverse, homegrown leadership for each team:  Kitchen Cabinet  Finance Council  House Meeting Hosts  Volunteers Corps  Election Protection Team Pelosi Boot Camp: Hawaii YDA Pacific 2015

5 RAISE THE MONEY  REMEMBER your ask shows what you think of yourself  FRIEND-raise before you fund-raise  SHOW through transparency how you spend money  ASK people who are always asked  BARTER time, childcare, space, food, coffee, etc  COMPLY with the laws and your own pledges Pelosi Boot Camp: Hawaii YDA Pacific 2015

6 CONNECT WITH PEOPLE  SHOW UP: reach people how & where they live, cultivating networks with BEEHIVES and BLACKBERRIES  SPEAK OUT and LISTEN: keep an Open Feedback Loop  RENEW your connection with follow up and thank you Pelosi Boot Camp: Hawaii YDA Pacific 2015

7 MOBILIZE TO WIN  RECRUIT volunteers by activating networks  Build a BASE of people who will walk in the rain, talk to strangers, and open their homes for you  KEEP volunteers with meaningful work related to their (people/physical/personal) skills and talents  FEED people, optimally with bartered food  MENTOR with good training and encouragement  TRACK their efforts and results  THANK people at every opportunity Pelosi Boot Camp: Hawaii YDA Pacific 2015

YOU WON! NOW WHAT?  REVIEW your campaign – be honest: did your victory come “magna cum laude” or “lawdy lawdy” ?!  PREPARE your transition  DO the job (don’t just BE something. DO something!)  STAY CLOSE to your people  KEEP your word  PAY it forward : your future is walking in your footsteps Pelosi Boot Camp: Hawaii YDA Pacific 2015

A FINAL THOUGHT FROM MY YOUNG DEMOCRAT Pelosi Boot Camp: Hawaii YDA Pacific 2015
