Chapter 2 Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies Workshop 1

Training Manual Electromagnetic Analysis in Workbench March 4, 2005 Inventory # WS01: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies Workshop #1: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies This workshop demonstrates how to create a sketch of a simple race track coil, convert it into a line body, and convert the line body into a winding body for use in an electromagnetic model. The objectives will be to calculate the field and coil self inductance.

Training Manual Electromagnetic Analysis in Workbench March 4, 2005 Inventory # Upon entering the workbench environment, choose new geometry. 1 WS01: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies

Training Manual Electromagnetic Analysis in Workbench March 4, 2005 Inventory # Change the desired unit length to millimeters. 1 2 WS01: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies

Training Manual Electromagnetic Analysis in Workbench March 4, 2005 Inventory # Click on the Sketching tab and choose Rectangle. Check the Auto Fillet box. Use the mouse cursor to make a freehand sketch of a racetrack coil. The first pick (step 3) will locate one corner. The second pick (step 4) will locate the corner diagonally opposite the first. The third pick (step 5) will size the fillets. Click on generate. 6 WS01: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies

Training Manual Electromagnetic Analysis in Workbench March 4, 2005 Inventory # Create a Line Body from the sketch as shown. 2: pick on the sketch 3 4 5: tree will be modified WS01: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies

Training Manual Electromagnetic Analysis in Workbench March 4, 2005 Inventory # Initiate the creation of a winding body from the newly created line body by changing the “Winding Body?” value to Yes. You will find that Design Modeler will NOT successfully create the winding body (note the red exclamation mark indicating that an error has occurred). Right click on the failed winding body to view the error: “Inconsistent direction or multiple junction in winding body” 2 3 (RMB) 4 WS01: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies

Training Manual Electromagnetic Analysis in Workbench March 4, 2005 Inventory # Fix this by reversing the direction of each of the 4 straight line segments. You must first activate line pick mode to do this. Pick on any straight line and change the value of reverse orientation to yes in Details. Once all 4 straight line orientations have been reversed, click on generate WS01: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies

Training Manual Electromagnetic Analysis in Workbench March 4, 2005 Inventory # You may now edit the successfully created winding body. Change the number of turns to 100 and the cross section dimensions to 5 X 5 mm. 2 1 WS01: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies

Training Manual Electromagnetic Analysis in Workbench March 4, 2005 Inventory # Use the enclosure tool to create a spherical body of air surrounding the coil. Note that since this is an air coil and there are no solid bodies in the geometry, it is not necessary to set the value of “Merge Parts?” in Details to Yes. Click generate to create the spherical domain. Click on File => Save As… and save to racetrack.agdb 2 3 WS01: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies

Training Manual Electromagnetic Analysis in Workbench March 4, 2005 Inventory # Click on the Project tab and then File => Save. Then select “New Simulation”. Select Environment from the tree and insert a flux parallel boundary. Use the mouse cursor to select the exterior surface of the spherical enclosure (it will highlight a green color) then click Apply in Details WS01: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies

Training Manual Electromagnetic Analysis in Workbench March 4, 2005 Inventory # (RMB) Insert a request for Total Flux Density results. 2 3 WS01: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies

Training Manual Electromagnetic Analysis in Workbench March 4, 2005 Inventory # (RMB) Insert a request for coil self inductance WS01: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies

Training Manual Electromagnetic Analysis in Workbench March 4, 2005 Inventory # Excitation: Define the current in the conductor winding body to be 1 A. Click on solve. 1 3 WS01: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies

Training Manual Electromagnetic Analysis in Workbench March 4, 2005 Inventory # The solution will take about a minute to complete. Click on Total Flux Density. You will see a contour of flux density on the exterior surface of the spherical enclosure. Click on the graphics button to view the flux density as vectors. The surface will be opaque, but this can be changed… 1 2 WS01: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies

Training Manual Electromagnetic Analysis in Workbench March 4, 2005 Inventory # Vector plots may be enhanced with the buttons shown a right: 1)Wireframe mode 2)Adjust displayed vector length 3)Adjust density of displayed vectors 4)Switch to 3D vectors WS01: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies

Training Manual Electromagnetic Analysis in Workbench March 4, 2005 Inventory # Display the coil self-inductance. WS01: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies
