HOMEWORK ●1st body paragraph November 17th ●Essay-- typed, MLA format November 20th ●“Wizard of Oz” December 1 (take RC test) ●RC Points due December 2 o English points o Honors-- 90 points

Story review-- quickwrite ●In your composition book: o Summarize (no more than 3 sentences) the short Edgar Allan Poe story. o What is the mood? Explain.

Literary Devices (write in composition book) Quick Review: ●Irony ●Foreshadow ●Imagery ●Simile ●Metaphor ●Dramatic Irony ●Personification ●Figure of Speech ●Dialect ●Symbols

Mood (in composition book) ●In “The Tell-Tale Heart” (or “The Cask of Amontillado”), what is the overall mood that Edgar Allan Poe is trying to portray? Explain (1 sentence) ●Shoulder partners-- compare moods.

Essay Thesis PROMPT: Authors use various literary devices to create a particular mood. Write an essay in which you identify two (three for honors) literary devices that the author uses, and explain how the use of these devices creates a _____ mood. Include at least two of the following academic words: factor, establish, authority, function, analyze, area, distribute, economy, influence, interpret.

Basic Essay Outline ●Intro ●Body paragraph (literary device #1) o Must include-- device, 2 quotes, explanation ●Body paragraph (literary device #2) o Must include-- device, 2 quotes, explanation ●Body paragraph (literary device #3--honors) o Must include-- device, 2 quotes, explanation ●Conclusion

Body Paragraph ●Literary device ●How does this device create the mood? ●Two quotes that relate to the literary device AND to the mood. ●Commentary-- this is where you explain how the device creates the mood.

Edit Body Paragraph ●Highlight literary device in yellow. ●Highlight quotes in green. ●Highlight commentary in orange. ●Circle any misspelled words or grammar errors. ●Does the commentary make sense? Does it talk about how the literary device creates the mood?

Conclusion ●Must include transition sentence. ●Restate the thesis. ●Concluding sentence relates to hook from intro.

Edit Complete Essay ●1st reader: o Highlight hook, transition words, academic vocabulary words. Are they used properly? ●2nd reader: o Look for the commentary. Does it connect the literary device and the mood? Does it make sense? ●3rd reader: o Mechanics and MLA formatting. Did they make spelling/grammar errors? Did they use the proper format for citing the story?

Due Thursday, 11/20! ●Essay is due tomorrow, 11/20 ●MUST be typed and in MLA format ●Include your peer-edited rough draft ●Highlight your academic vocabulary words on final draft
