PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS Work out the miss-spelt drugs Why do you think athletes take performance enhancing? Why Take Drugs? Desire to be the best. Pressure to be the best. Believe that it is their only option. To speed up recovery. Recently many sportspeople have been caught for positive drugs tests including footballers Edgar Davitz & Jaap Stam for taking Nadrolone.

There are 6 types of performance enhancing drugs, what are they? Anabolic steroids Narcotic Analgesics Stimulants Beta blockers Peptide hormones. EPO Erythroprotein. Diuretics Did you know them all ?

Anabolic steroids (not just steroids) enhance the performance of an athlete how? These drugs help increase muscle mass and bone growth and they allow the athlete to train harder. The result will be a fast and significant increase in muscular strength and power vital in sports such as sprinting and rugby.

The negative impact of taking anabolic steroids on the performer are? The negative side effects include an increased chance of heart attack, high blood pressure, infertility and liver damage.

Narcotic analgesics don’t enhance performance but they allow the athlete to continue and break through the pain barrier. Narcotic analgesics allow the athlete to train even when injured or return to training and competing even though the athlete is not fully fit. The Governing Bodies of Sport banned these substances to try and protect the health of the performers in their sport.

The negative impact of narcotic analgesics are what? increase the risk of making the injury worse. Loss of concentration Lack of balance Lack of co-ordination

Stimulants enhance the performance of athletes by doing what? By stimulating the central nervous system thereby increasing alertness, and they can also be used to offset the effects of lactic acid on muscles. Which sports performers would take these?

The negative (side effects) of stimulants on the performer are what? Side effects include insomnia. Irregular heartbeats. Increased heart rate. High blood pressure.

Beta Blockers enhance the performance how? Slow the heart rate down Stop the performer from shaking Calm the nerves What type of sports would this be useful in?

What are the negative effects of Beta Blockers on the performer? Side effects include nausea Diarrhoea Tiredness Depression Low blood pressure

Peptide Hormones are a performance enhancing drug that mimic natural hormones in the body. One such type of drug is EPO (erythropotein), this is what Lance Armstrong has been accused of taking. What do you think this drug does to help enhance performance? It increases the number of red blood cells that the body naturally produces meaning that more oxygen can be carried by blood to the working muscles. This will allow the athlete to have the ability to keep working for longer..
