Setting the Scene You’ve been giving your site location address which is a single carriageway on a busy high street with a 30mph limit Weather conditions are dry and sunny The job entails a shaft and heading What are the 5 key risks you should consider before you start to break ground?

SUMMER HAZARDS

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A HEALTHY TAN! A tan is a sign that the skin has been damaged. Too much sun will speed up the ageing of your skin, making it leathery, mottled and wrinkled, but the most serious effect is an increased chance of developing skin cancer. Over the last 25 years, the rate of skin cancer has risen faster than any other top 10 cancers in males & females. Construction workers are six times more likely to develop skin cancer than the general population.

HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF? Keep your top on Wear a hat with a brim or a flap that covers the ears and the back of the neck. Stay in the shade whenever possible, during your breaks and especially at lunch time. Use a high factor sunscreen of at least SPF15 on any exposed skin. Check your skin regularly for any unusual moles or spots. See a doctor promptly if you find anything that is changing in shape, size or colour, itching or bleeding.

What is Dehydration? Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluid than you take in. Water is essential for a healthy body Some of the early warning signs of dehydration include: feeling thirstythirsty lightheaded having dark coloured, strong-smelling urine passing urine less often than usual

What to do to Prevent Dehydration Drink plenty of fluids if you're dehydrated. This can be water, semi-skimmed milk, diluted squash or fruit juice, but it's best to avoid caffeine and fizzy drinks. Drink often and in small amounts Increase your fluid intake while exercising and during hot weather
