Several ways to open a presentation  Would like + infinitive --Today I’d like to tell you about our new plans. --This morning I’d like to bring you up to date on our department.  Going to + infinitive --I’m going to talk to you today about new developments in the R&D department. --This afternoon I’m going to be reporting on the new division.  Will + infinitive --I’ll begin by explaining the function --I’ll start off by reviewing our progress --After that, I’ll move on to my next point  Will be + verb –ing --I’ll be talking about our guidelines for Internet use --During the next hour we’ll be looking at the advantages of this system CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Structuring a presentation P:8

How to structure a talk??? The most common way is to have three main parts. And then subdivide them into (three) smaller part. E.g. I’ve divided my presentation into three (main) parts; x, y, and z. --In my presentation I’ll focus on three major issues CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Structuring a presentation P:9

First (of all) I’ll be looking at..., second..., and third... --I’ll begin/start off by explaining... --Then/Next/After that, I’ll go on to... --Finally, I’ll offer some solutions. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Structuring a presentation P:9

Look at the book!!! Deal with the activities!!! Pages 8, 9, 10, and 11!!! Act CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Activities on the book

The final part of the introduction Deals with the organization of the talk How long it will last Whether there will be handouts How questions will be handled CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Organization p.11

--I’ll be handing out copies of the PowerPoint slides at the end of my talk. --I’ll the PowerPoint presentation to you. Questions --There will be time for questions after my presentation. --If you have any questions, feel free to interrupt at any time. --feel free to ask questions at any time during my talk. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Organization p.11

--Timing --My presentation will take about 20 minutes. --It should take about 30 minutes to cover these issues. Handouts --Does everyone have an handout/brochure/report? Please take one, and pass them on. --Don’t worry about taking notes. I’ve put all the important statistics on a handout for you. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Organization p.11

CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Getting the Audience Attention

To arouse curiosity without any real answer Watch out! No cliché questions!!!  Is market research important for brand development?  Do we really need quality assurance?  Have you ever stood in a freezing river at 5 o’clock in the morning by choice? CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Asking A Rhetorical Question

Famous and easily recognized Familiarity with the subject Avoid triteness as overused quotations may bore the audience E.g. -- “Sovereignty is not given, it is taken.” By -- “If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend six hours sharpening my axe.” By -- “A person who never made a mistake ever tried anything new.” by CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Opening a strong quotation

To startle and shock the audience E.g. --According to an article I read recently, central banks are now buying Euros instead of dollars. --Did you know that fast food consumption has increased by 600% in Europe since 2002? CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Start with an interesting fact

Should be closely related to the topic Should be brief (10% of your talk) E.g. --I remember when I attended a meeting in Paris,... --At a conference in Madrid, I was once asked the following question:... CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Tell a story or anecdote

E.g. --Suppose you wanted to set up a new call centre, how would you go about it? --Imagine you had to reorganize the sales department. What would be your first step? CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Give them a problem to think about

Creating suspense Activating the audience’s imagination Giving a definition Using a visual, prop or gimmick Misdirecting the audience (BE CAREFUL!!!) CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Other techniques to get attention

Using an attention getter that has no real link to your topic Using an attention getter just because you find it interesting without thinking about how to relate it to the topic of the talk Leaving the attention-getting technique to the very end of the introduction CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Common mistakes –DON’T DO!!

Starting with a long attention getter that leaves your audience wondering where it ends and your presentation starts. Beginning with “before I start, I’d like to say...” You have already started. Making an introduction which is disproportionately long. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Common mistakes –DON’T DO !!

Look at the book!!! Deal with the activities!!! Pages 12 and 13!!! Act CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Look at the book!

Make your introduction relevant to your topic: The introduction must relate to your message in content, tone, and style. An interesting story that gets our attention and has an impact is not an appropriate attention getter if it bears no relevance to the content of the speech. Choose sth that supports, illuminates, or illustrates your message. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Key points for Introduction (Wrap-up)

Open with short forceful sentences: Short sentences have directness that make an impact. Long sentences create an obstacle for both the presenter and the listener because they are harder to say and harder to follow. Get to the point: Tie your introduction in with your subject and purpose as quickly and effectively as possible. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Key points for Introduction (Wrap-up)

Presentation anxiety is a physical and psychological reaction to the task of getting up to speak in front of a group of people. Presentation anxiety often involves a central fear of being scrutinized and judged unfavourably by others. Students who are very anxious about presentations often say that they fear being the centre of attention and will feel self-conscious and embarrassed when they speak. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT How to overcome Speech Anxiety

Some worry that they will ‘look stupid’ to others, make a mistake or be judged unsuccessful. Others may express a belief that what they have to say is not worthwhile as no one would be interested. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT How to overcome Speech Anxiety

1. Prepare well 2. Learn to relax 3. Check out the room 4. Know your audience 5. Concentrate on the message 6. Visualize success CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Dealing with Nervousness P: 14
