Presentation transcript:

How to deal with global warming Identify the potential threats Quantify the threats--provide the timing and the magnitude of the threats Educate the public--bring the perception and reality closer Explore ways to reduce the impact of global warming Enhance understanding between the developed world and the developing nations, and promote international collaboration Prepare for the worst scenarios

Identify the threats What is at stake? The goal to achieve a more sustainable and equitable living standard The goal to minimize the chances for conflict and war among nations--a more peaceful world The very survival of a living Earth and the human race

What may hinder the efforts for a more equitable living standard The spatial shift of climate zones The tendency for more floods/droughts The general effect on the agriculture--the production of food

A Major Cause for War! Inequity in living standard within a nation and across nations!

Catastrophic changes A run-away greenhouse effect? A snow-balling earth? A run-way albedo feedback? Shifting among different climate regimes? Is the climate system at a critical point?

Educate The Public And The Policy Makers Basic knowledge about the climate system Basic statistical techniques to interpret data Invest in environmental research Get used to probabilistic forecasts
