5 facts about FIRE FIGHTERS! Many fire fighters still use a pole to get down to their fire engines rather than using the stairs. Fire fighters wear protective clothing called ‘turnout gear’ – this has to be very strong to help protect them from fire, heat, electricity, water, smoke and things falling on them but also has to be light so they can move easily There are two types of fire fighters: WHOLE TIME who work full-time in cities and towns and RETAINED who work part-time in the countryside. In Victorian times, fire fighters used to live in the fire stations with their families with their children cleaning the engines and uniforms. Fire fighters don’t just put out fires, they also rescue trapped people and animals, deal with floods and road crashes, inspect fire equipment, teach other people in how to prevent fires and work with their local community.
