Lesson 13

Today’s Agenda Return papers!! Reading Comprehension Practice Activity 4.8 – Framing the Subject OBJECTIVES Understand the purpose and conventions of an author’s notes as a genre. Explain how authors can use sentence structure for effect.

Return Papers! Put returned papers in the appropriate sections of your binder or folder.

Reading Comprehension Practice Look over your notes. What strategies will you try today?

Reflect 2. Did you read the introductions? On the back of your test packet, reflect on your performance. Which of the testing strategies did you use? What do you wished you would have done? Here are some points to consider as you reflect: 1. Did you go through and select a passage that interested you and start there? 2. Did you read the introductions? 3. Did you mark passages as you skimmed? 4. Did you read the questions first? 5. Did you mark out wrong answers? (process of elimination) 6. Did you leave any blank?

Into the Wild Pass out books! Write your first and last name in the front of the book.

Author Jon Krakauer born 1954 started climbing mountains at age 8 two best-selling books: Into Thin Air and Into the Wild wrote Into Thin Air after a failed expedition to climb Mt. Everest. The book earned him a nomination as one of the finalists for the Pulitzer Prize

Author’s Note Paragraphs 1-2: Mark key information about Christopher McCandless. Paragraph 3: Circle verbs. Paragraph 4: Underline Krakauer’s statement of purpose and subject of text. Paragraphs 5-7: Mark words that reveal Krakauer’s attitude toward McCandless. Paragraph 8: Identify contrasting ideas.

GENRE CONVENTIONS of the Author’s Note What does GENRE CONVENTION mean? What are some genre conventions of the author’s note? 1st person Directly addresses the reader Explains the motivation and/or goals for writing the text Gives background on the development of the text/the writer’s thinking Makes the writer’s bias explicit 1st person Directly addresses the reader Explains the motivation and/or goals for writing the text Gives background on the development of the text/the writer’s thinking Makes the writer’s bias explicit

Exit Slip 1. Paragraphs 1-3: What kind of person do you think Christopher McCandless was? Use specific details to support your answer. 2. Paragraph 4: Why did Krakauer write Into the Wild? 3. Paragraphs 5-8: How does the general public feel about Krakauer?

Krakauer’s “Author’s Note” Label in the margin: Identify shifts in the point of view Identify shifts in objective and subjective descriptions.

Not Standard English You may have noticed that some writers use informal spelling and usage. This practice is common in song lyrics. For example, the song “Rocky Mountain High” uses informal spelling. When he first came to the mountains his life was far away On the road and hangin’ by a song But the string’s already broken and he doesn’t really care Keeps changin’ fast, it don’t last for long

Writing Prompt: Write an analytical text explaining how Krakauer uses structure and style to show his shifting feelings toward his subject, Chris McCandless. Be sure to: Begin with a statement that presents your analytical statement and use commentary to link your evidence to your central claim. Support your claim with specific evidence from the text. Make effective choices for meaning or style.
