5 th Grade ELA Workshop Tuesday October 28, 2014 Mrs. Plotkin

What is Ready Gen? Ready Gen is a comprehensive core ELA curriculum using text sets and routine based instruction. The goals of Ready Gen are: 1.To build strong readers that can develop big ideas and understandings about all kinds of texts. 2.Promote thinking and understanding through text based evidence. 3.Grow reading stamina and practice close reading on a daily basis. 4.To practice writing that is closely linked to their reading and is text based.

What does a Ready Gen Lesson look like? First Read- Students read a portion of that days text independently Close Read/Text Based Conversation- Class meets and rereads part or all of the text and teacher guides discussion. Thinking Map or Shared Activity- Class works together to grow ideas about text Independent Task- Students apply information from thinking map to complete work Support/Extension- small groups work together to support or extend students work. Share

Your Task… Please read Chapter 1 in Rachel Carson- Pioneer of Ecology Objective Readers explain the relationships between two ore more events in a historical text based on specific information in the text. Be ready with the definitions of the words below. Use context clue to help you. tinkered p. 4

Close Reading Work Close Reading Questions 1. How would you describe the place where Rachel grew up? Use details from the text. 2. Why was Rachel "glad to go outdoors"? Use details from p. 2 to support your answers. 3. In what way were Rachel's brother and sister "more like an aunt and uncle"? What did Rachel and Robert do together?

Independent Work Reading Analysis Historical context is the time and place in which events took place. When reading biographies, analyze historical context to better understand the world in which the person lived. It also helps readers understand the relationships between people, events and ideas - as well as the challenges - particluar to a specific place and time.

Continued… Independent Reading Practice Reread Ch. 1. Create a circle map identifying information about the historical context of Rachel Carson's youth by answering the following questions: 1) Where and when did Rachel grow up? 2) What obstacles did Rachel face going to school? 3) How did Rachel's mother affect her learning? 4) What was Rachel's relationship to animals? 5) What are some ways Rachel found out about the world around her?

Teachers College Writing Curriculum Components of Writers Workshop Writers Workshop follows a predictable pattern. Mini Lesson (10 minutes) Independent Practice (20-30 minutes) Conferencing (during independent practice) Sharing (5-10 minutes)

What is a Mini-Lesson A Mini-Lesson is explicit instruction in a specific writing technique taught in a 5-10 minute period 4 Types of Mini Lessons – Procedures and Organization – Strategies and Process – Skills – Craft and Techniques

Independent Writing Students write daily Students choose their own topics within a certain genre Students use a writers notebook and folder to organize their writing Teacher’s role is a facilitator… circulating, monitoring, encouraging, conferencing and helping as needed. When you’re done, you’ve just begun!”

Writing Conferences Teachers confer with students on a daily basis to help them grow individually. Conferencing happens during the independent writing portion. Teacher confer with students once every 2-3 weeks or a as needed. Student are given focused personal goals to work on

Sharing Sharing is an integral part of writers workshop Students are given opportunities to share their writing Writers learn from example and are able to take risks Some of our best learning is during the share.
