EXTRA! EXTRA! STREET FIGHTING IN VERONA! Newspaper Report

Newspaper Report Assignment Your assignment is to continue writing a newspaper report based on events in Romeo & Juliet. The portion done for you covers the action from the first line of Act 1, Scene 1 to Tybalt’s entrance. You are to continue the article, covering the action from Tybalt’s entrance to the end of the Prince’s speech. You are also required to sketch a picture of the brawl scene in the space on the left-hand side of the handout. This is a 30-Point In-Class Assignment grade. You will be assessed on a rubric (you’ll see it in a moment).

Journalism A good newspaper report focuses on the 5 W’s and H: Who? (Who was involved in the street fight?) What? (What happened during the street fight?) When? (When did the street fight occur?) Where? (Where did the street fight take place?) Why? (What were the reasons for why there was a street fight?) How? (How did people respond to the street fight?) Do not neglect the picture! A great photo draws the reader’s attention to the article. Be as descriptive as possible, but do not simply dump facts into your article. You want the writing to be interesting enough to hold a newspaper reader’s short attention span.

How do I start? At your desk, reread the portion of text from Act 1, Scene one that covers from Tybalt’s entrance to the end of Prince Escalus’ speech. Read it several times if necessary. Pre-Write: Answer the Five W’s and H on a separate sheet of paper to help you get your facts straight. Begin writing. Please write in pencil in case you need to erase something. Work on your picture. You can work on the photo at any point during the writing process today. I have colored pencils you can use.
