AGU 2014 Fall Meeting, Dec 2014, San Francisco, CA Outline 1.Introduction 2.Update on ASCII for Science Data WB 3.Update on Airborne WG 4.Update on Geospatial WG 5.Conclusions

AGU 2014 Fall Meeting, Dec 2014, San Francisco, CA Introduction Earth Science Data Systems Working Groups (ESDSWG) setup by NASA HQ in 2004 Make recommendations relevant to NASA’s Earth science data systems Each group works independently Work funded by MEaSUREs

AGU 2014 Fall Meeting, Dec 2014, San Francisco, CA ASCII for Science Data Working Group Action Plan Mission Statement Define a minimum set of information to be provided in ASCII data file headers so that these files are self-describing to the extent that a future data user will be able to decode and use the data in the file using only the information contained in the file header. Stakeholders DAACs, especially those holding data from in situ or airborne instruments Data providers and their communities with a long heritage of providing data in ASCII files Data users who prefer plain ASCII data Approach Define use cases, e.g., o Data in from field o Data to users who prefer ASCII o Data export from tools Review at various ASCII data guidelines documents Look at sample data from different DAACs and data providers Outcomes, Deliverables, Milestones Best practices document describing guidelines for creating self-describing science data files in ASCII. Example data files.

AGU 2014 Fall Meeting, Dec 2014, San Francisco, CA ASCII for Science Data Working Group Progress Monthly telecons Created draft guidelines document (from Icebridge) Comparing different ASCII formats with guidelines Minimum amount of information needed Plan to submit recommendations for the March meeting

AGU 2014 Fall Meeting, Dec 2014, San Francisco, CA Airborne Working Group Action Plan Mission Statement Help address Data Management challenges to Airborne Missions that are relevant to EDIS, e.g., Data format Metadata Data access Programmatic enforcement of data documentation & delivery Knowing where the data exist Processing Stakeholders DAACs Airborne data providers Airborne data users Program sponsors Activities Survey stakeholders Collect use cases, lessons learned Identify all airborne data sources Approach Identify challenges and pain point Assess and prioritize Develop approach to provide solutions Deliverables Artifacts o Documentation of concerns o Use cases o Inventory of data sources Findings & Recommendations o Documentation of scope, priority o Next steps

AGU 2014 Fall Meeting, Dec 2014, San Francisco, CA Airborne Working Group Progress Frequent telecons Found over 350 instruments Created instrument & field mission questionnaires (Mike Gangl) Gathering info for each instrument WG will continue for another year, at least

AGU 2014 Fall Meeting, Dec 2014, San Francisco, CA Geophysical Working Group Action Plan

AGU 2014 Fall Meeting, Dec 2014, San Francisco, CA Geophysical Working Group Progress Frequent telecons Attend GIS mtgs Use open source software (freely downloaded) Created Geothon – Python code examples (GIS Cookbook) Submit recommendation to ESDIS?

AGU 2014 Fall Meeting, Dec 2014, San Francisco, CA Conclusions Good progress has been made in all 3 WGs Will submit ASCII for Science Data recommendations by March 2015 Much data gathering needs to be done for Airborne May be able to submit Geospation recommendations by March 2015
