What you want to be doing? What you like doing Most senior roles are out of the lab Speed of move out of lab depends on path Important that you want the end role Salary There are high paying salaries in every function In some functions very few people are on a high salary Salaries start at £25,000-£30,000 for PhDs in Life Science After 10 years, Salaries will range from £30,000 - £80,000 Where you want to live There are biotech clusters across the UK. If you move to a location with a cluster of biotech companies in your field, you will be able to move companies more easily. Some parts of the UK have very little biotech Sales & Clinical are more likely to be flexible on location, but you may have a large travel component, including overnight stays. taylorollinson scientific recruitment

Future Proof your Career Don’t worry if you’re currently working in a shrinking field, you will have transferable skills, and you can move between fields. A new commercial field is a secure place, where you can be confident you will be able to progress in your career quickly. New fields could be in Academia, Start-up or established Biotech Is it commercially viable? Is it selling something? Does it have clinical trials? Are there multiple companies in the field? Will it be Automated or Obsolete? Routine Microbiology testing and could soon be automated. Think about the future prospects for a technology, and if being a specialist in this technology will still be desirable in 10 years. taylorollinson scientific recruitment

Big Company or Small For other industries – Finance, Consulting, Law, it’s certainly better to start your career in a big company. For Science roles, it depends on what you want to do: Judge companies on a case by case basis. No hard and fast rules Lab roles/ Bioinformatics What you do is important, not where you do it. Regulatory Affairs Often need Company with clinical trials, large or small Quality Assurance Best roles generally have on-site manufacturing Sales and Marketing Product and territory more important. taylorollinson scientific recruitment

Post-Doc? Lab and Bioinformatics roles value post-doc experience similarly to the amount of years of industry equivalence, however it’s rare for your first industry role to be in management. Very difficult to get Regulatory Affairs, Quality Assurance, Sales and Medical Affairs experience in academia. A Post-Doc can be a good way to get into a different field, but if you’re looking to move out of Lab and Bioinformatics, then best to move into industry quickly. taylorollinson scientific recruitment

Getting to the Top You should put as much thought and strategy in your career as you would in experimental design. Have a clear plan in what you want to do, and then make the plan of how to get there. Common advice is to treat each role as a 3 year contract, with a set progression you want to make. After 3 years, move internally, or move externally. Always have an exit plan. Before accepting your first role in industry, think about the role you want after that. Keep aware of the market – having a 10 min discussion once every 6 months with a good recruiter is an ideal way to do this. taylorollinson scientific recruitment
