Currently on BARD—Braille Washington Arizona North Carolina Georgia Hawaii Florida Utah Iowa Massachusetts Wisconsin South Dakota

Audiobooks on BARD Two types of network-produced audiobooks on BARD – DBCs – DBNs History – Braille in BARD – Network Bulletin 12-02

DBC Prefix Meets requirements of NS01 and NS02 Submitted to NLS by producing library

DBN Prefix Meets contractor requirement specifications Reviewed by MSCE through the QA program Reviewed by NLS QAS Submitted to BARD by MSCE

DBC Requirements NS01: Requirements for Locally Produced Digital Talking Books – Compliant with ANSI/NISO Z – Book number: DBCnnnnn – Well-formed and valid OPF, NCX, and SMIL – Contains specific metadata NS02: Requirements for Protecting and Uploading Locally Produced Digital Talking Books – Protected DTB – Zip file structure – File named DBCnnnnn.pdtb.zip – Catalog record – Uploaded to network site

Pre-pilot In August of 2013, NLS conducted a pre-pilot for posting DBCs on BARD. The purpose of the pre-pilot was to refine the requirements and specifications and to test the internal procedures. We also learned a lot about some of the misconceptions and miscommunications.

Pre-pilot—What we learned Encryption issues – MIME type – Renaming output Testing NLS processes Delivery issues (Fed Google Docs)

Pilot In March of 2014 NLS announced the pilot. The purpose of the pilot is two-fold. – Training in processes, technicalities, and requirements for posting audiobooks to BARD – Certification for posting materials to BARD Three phases of the pilot: – Evaluation – Upload – Verification

Phase 1: Evaluation Review requirements in NS01 and training materials Select born-digital audiobook Receive DBC numbers from BCS Assign number to book Fill out and submit catalog Completion Form Load properly named, protected zip file and unprotected files of book on cartridge Attend video conference with Phillip Carbo Send to Chris Mundy to evaluate against the NLS Checklist

Phase 1: Evaluation Evaluation checklist is divided into two sections: Requirements and Recommendations – Requirements are necessary for posting to BARD – Recommendations are suggestions for improving the quality of your book

Evaluation Checklist Requirements Based on NS01 and NS02 – OPF, NCX, SMIL – Encryption – Zip structure – Naming convention Recommendations Based on NG04 – Narration – Sound quality – Navigation – Agreement with print book – DTB-naming convention – Overall quality

Phase 2: Upload Review requirements in NS02 and training materials Set up a Google account Regional librarian—send required information to Ensure proper protection/encryption, zip structure, file name After access is granted to upload site, upload zip file of book to your library’s folder

Phase 3: Verify Log into BARD Go to the Admin Home page Under the Network-produced material approval pages heading, select the Network-produced material approval tool link From the approval screen select DBC from the Prefix drop-down menu and/or Awaiting approval from the Status drop-down menu. Your book will display. Select the link verify [title] in the summary listing of your book Review the bibliographic data and download the book to verify that it performs as expected Select Approved from the drop-down menu and select update Your book is now available to all BARD users

Open Submission Libraries who are certified by the pilot or pre- pilot process may upload audiobooks at their leisure With the exception of the evaluation, the steps we have just outlined will be the process you use to submit audiobooks to BARD – Fill out and submit the completion form – Upload properly named, encrypted zip file to the network upload site – Log in to BARD and verify your book

Audio Magazines Why are they different? Magazines do not have catalog records BARD gets all information from file name and OPF We will be developing requirements for non- MSCE QA magazines in the near future 10 network-produced magazines, that have passed the MSCE QA program are currently on BARD

Library Recording Programs Why have a recording program in your library? – Engaging volunteers – Win/Win NLS resources – Chris Mundy – Phillip Carbo – NLS studio – Documentation Audiobook production tools – Now easier and less expensive than ever to digitally record and make DTBs
