Chapter 6 Workshop 5 Solid Conductor
WS05: Solid Conductor Workshop #5: Solid Conductor A DC energized coil is wrapped around a permeable C core. The geometry of the core and coil are available on a parasolids file and are imported into Workbench. The geometry is cut in half and the resulting half symmetry model is solved. The current distribution in conductors modeled in this manner is that of a DC energized solid conductor (NOT uniform over the cross section as with stranded conductors and NOT subject to redistribution due to the skin effect). Although the current distribution is that of a single turn solid conductor, the number of turns specified for such conductors may be greater than one. Error introduced by approximating stranded coils in this manner is usually acceptable for most applications. WS05: Solid Conductor We wish to create a half symmetry model. In order to cut the imported geometry, it must first be “frozen”. 1 C Core with DC energized coil Current distribution in coil March 4, 2005 Inventory #002210 6-5
WS05: Solid Conductor Create a slice plane. Select the global ZXPlane to be the base plane of the slice. 1 4 2 March 4, 2005 Inventory #002210 6-6 3
WS05: Solid Conductor Hold the Ctrl button down and use the LMB to select the 3 parts labeled “Solid” in the tree. The RMB will produce the drop down menu shown at right. Select “Suppress Body” to eliminate upper portions of the geometry from further consideration. 1: Ctrl + LMB 2 March 4, 2005 Inventory #002210 6-7
WS05: Solid Conductor Save the design modeler geometry and click on the Project tab. Select “New Simulation”. Choose Emag Branch in the simulation wizard to help guide you through the simulation process. March 4, 2005 Inventory #002210 6-8

WS05: Solid Conductor Insert a zero voltage boundary on the conductor. Graphically pick one of the cut surfaces of the coil and click apply in “Details”. Additionally, insert a 50 A current to the other exposed face of the coil on the symmetry plane (not shown). 3 4 1 (RMB) 5 2 March 4, 2005 Inventory #002210 6-13
WS05: Solid Conductor Insert a flux parallel boundary condition on the spherical exterior of the enclosure and on the symmetry plane. Hold down the Ctrl button as you use the LMB to pick the surfaces. Click Apply in Details when done. 3 1 (RMB) 2 March 4, 2005 Inventory #002210 6-14
WS05: Solid Conductor Create a selection group by graphically selecting the core and selecting the “Create Selections Group” button. Name the selection magnet. This name will be referenced in a command file that we will read in next. The command file will produce a contour plot of relative permeability as a post processing operation. 3 1 4 5 2 March 4, 2005 Inventory #002210 6-15
