ELEMENTS OF FICTION & LITERARY DEVICE REVIEW MS. EFPATRIDIS

ELEMENTS OF FICTION What are the 7 main elements of fiction ?

ELEMENTS OF FICTION 1.Plot 2.Point of View 3.Atmosphere/Mood 4.Characters 5.Conflict 6.Theme 7.Setting

ELEMENTS OF FICTION List the 6 aspects of plot in order.

ELEMENTS OF FICTION 1.Introduction (Exposition) 2.Trigger or Inciting Incident 3.Rising Action 4.Climax 5.Falling Action 6.Conclusion (Denouement / Resolution)

Do you know the role or function of each? Notes:

ELEMENTS OF FICTION The narrator tells the story about other people and uses the pronouns “they” “I” “her” etc. The narrative perspective of a story is known as “point- of-view” There are 3 narrative perspectives used by authors:

POINT OF VIEW THIRD PERSON – OMNISCIENT THIRD PERSON – LIMITED FIRST PERSON

ELEMENTS OF FICTION The narrator knows everything about all the characters and the events, and can shift from character to character. Insight is given about how characters feel and what they think. Details are relayed through a “god-like” perspective – all knowing and all seeing. What type of point-of-view is described above?

ELEMENTS OF FICTION Using this perspective, the narrator is often a participant in the story, a bystander or observer. Not all the details are revealed because the narrator does not have insight to all events, nor the feelings and thoughts or beliefs of the characters.

ELEMENTS OF FICTION MOOD or ATMOSPHERE

ATMOSPHERE OR MOOD This is the emotional colouring created in the story by the author’s selection of details, description, use of imagery, etc. It is the feeling the reader gets from his/her experience with the story.

ELEMENTS OF FICTION Protagonist - Antagonist – May be a villain; not all stories have an antagonist.

ELEMENTS OF FICTION Minor characters – are less significant in a story Static characters – Dynamic characters – change throughout a text Round characters – display many traits Flat characters –

ELEMENTS OF FICTION Characterization refers to how an author chooses to reveal his/her characters. There are 5 main methods of characterizations...

ELEMENTS OF FICTION Direct Characterization 1. His/her physical appearance (most basic by the author) Indirect Characterization 1. What he/she says (speech and dialogue) 2. What he/she thinks, feels and dreams 3. What he/she does or does not do (actions) 4. What others say about him/her and how others react to him/her

ELEMENTS OF THE SHORT STORY List the 2 types of conflicts What are the most common conflicts? a. b. c. d. e. f.

ELEMENTS OF FICTION  Internal  External 1.Person vs. Self - this is the only internal conflict 1. Person vs. Nature 2. Person vs. Society 3. Person vs. Supernatural 4. Person vs. Technology 5. Person vs. Person

ELEMENTS OF FICTION Define the term “theme”...

ELEMENTS OF FICTION Theme is the story’s message, unifying or central idea. Theme is the author’s commentary on an aspect of human nature or life in general. It is not the topic. It is the message that the author is sharing about the topic or issue. Ie. A story might be about war – this is the topic The theme might be that war destroys all innocence and life. Do not convey theme in terms of cliché. Ie. Do not judge a book by its cover. XXXXXX

ELEMENTS OF FICTION Define the term “setting”...

ELEMENTS OF FICTION The setting is where (place) and when (time) the story occurs. Authors give clues about the time era of a story - speech, methods of transportation, the cost of items, etc. Stories set also have a universal setting – be relevant anytime and anywhere
