Parts of the Essay A clear, concise, and defined thesis statement that occurs in the first paragraph of the essay. Clear and logical transitions between the introduction, body, and conclusion. What is a thesis statement? A thesis statement is a strong statement that you can prove with evidence. It is not a simple statement of fact. Your thesis statement will be the main idea of your entire project. A thesis statement should be the product of your own critical thinking after you have done some research. 

Body Paragraphs Begin with your topic sentence for this paragraph. Give evidence in the form of a quote from a source. Explain your evidence to the reader. Transition to your next paragraph.

Counterclaim A counterclaim is where the writer acknowledges the opposing viewpoints.

Conclusion Begin with a restatement of your thesis Restate your main points (topic sentences) In a NEW WAY. End with a broad sentence about your topic.

“The Lady or the Tiger” Essay Prompt: Based on evidence from the story to back up your position, write an essay in which you argue whether the lady or the tiger came out of the door when the young man opened it. This should be a five paragraph essay—an introduction, three evidence-filled body paragraphs (one including a counterclaim), and a conclusion. This should be at least two-pages long

Look at the evidence you filled out for homework. Decide for which you will argue—the lady or the tiger. Compile the strongest pieces of evidence according to which ones deal with a similar subject.

You must use at least one direct quote from the story in each body paragraph to support your opinion. Refer back to the text of the story for supporting quotes. You are trying to persuade your reader of what the princess would do, not what you would do. Do not use “I” or bring yourself into this essay; stick to the princess’ point of view in this decision.
