December 4, 2014 Comparative essay rough draft Ho mework: F inish comparative essay rough draft - peer editing tomorrow! Bring BYOT for tomorrow if you plan on typing your final paper. Objective I can evaluate patterns of organization in unfamiliar informational texts for the purposes of comparing and contrasting texts. Wa rm Up: Take out your outline. If you have BYOT, you will need to get it turned on, set up to your word processing software. If you need to plug it in then you will need to sit by an outlet. You will spend most of the block working on your rough draft. Anything you don't finish must be finished at home for homework. You need all 4 paragraphs for full credit.

Introductory paragraph - The writer… - Introduces themselves (has their first and last name) and their role as a newspaper editor. -Explains the purpose of comparing and contrasting the two articles (to select one that will be included in the newspaper) -Explains the points of comparison that will be used (text structure and elaboration techniques) -References both articles using their full titles and their authors -Article names are either in italics (if typed) or have “quotation marks” around them. -Thesis statement is the last sentence in the introductory paragraph, and states their claim that one article is a better choice than the other based on its text structure and elaboration techniques.

2nd paragraph (first body paragraph) – TEXT STRUCTURE – The writer: - Has a topic sentence that introduces the first POC (point of comparison) – TEXT STRUCTURE. -States something similar about the text structure of both articles. -Introduces the text structure of article 1 -States the main idea of article 1 -Gives two examples that support how the author developed the text structure of article 1 -Explains why they believe the text structure of article 1 was / was not effective -Introduces the text structure of article 2 -States the main idea of article 2 -Gives two examples that support how the author developed the text structure of article 2 -Explains why they believe the text structure of article 2 was / was not effective

3rd paragraph (second body paragraph) – ELABORATION TECHNIQUES – The writer: - Has a topic sentence that introduces the first POC (point of comparison) – ELABORATION TECHNIQUES -States something similar about the elaboration techniques of both articles. -Restates the main idea of article 1 -Gives two elaboration techniques used by the author and specific examples from the text for each elaboration technique -Explains why they believe the elaboration techniques of article 1 were / were not effective -Restates the main idea of article 2 -Gives two elaboration techniques used by the author and specific examples from the text for each elaboration technique -Explains why they believe the elaboration techniques of article 2 were / were not effective

4th paragraph – CONCLUSION - The writer: -Restates their job as editor and their role -Restates their thesis relating to the article of their choice based on the POCs
