Comparing Characters’ Challenges Today I want to teach you that readers can compare characters by looking at the challenges in their lives and noticing if they are similar. Readers also look to see how the characters overcome the obstacles in their lives. We can think, What are the situations that these characters are facing? How are these characters attempting to solve their problems? What is the same about the way in which they overcome their challenges? Is there something common in the way they are solving their lives’ issues? 9:00 – 9:15

Comparing Characters’ Challenges Let’s apply that to Jack and Miranda in Wonder. If we compare them we discover that both find themselves in situations where they betrayed a friend. First Jack: Jack betrays his friendship with August by badmouthing him with Julian at the Halloween party. He gets caught up in trying to be “cool” with Julian and doesn’t realize he is betraying his friend. However, it is clear that Jack really thinks the world of August. Once Jack realizes that August has overheard him, he accepts responsibility for his behavior and apologizes to August.

Comparing Characters’ Challenges Now Miranda: Miranda betrays her friendship with Olivia by continually avoiding her at school. She hangs out with a new group of kids at school and badmouths Olivia to her friend, Ella. However, it is clear that she still loves Olivia and her family. Miranda pretended she was sick so that Olivia could take her place in the school play as a way of trying to do the right thing. After the performance, she spotted August and saved him from the confusion of the crowd. Olivia and her family welcomed Miranda with open arms. Both Jack and Miranda learned powerful lessons about friendship and forgiveness.

Building Theories about Characters Add to Anchor Chart: Building Theories about Characters We step outside of the story to help us build theories about the characters. We pay attention to characters’ actions to reveal what kind of people they are. We pay attention to the ways in which other characters treat the main character. We use precise, exact words to describe our characters and their actions. We keep our theories in mind as we continue reading. We pay attention to characters’ motivations and struggles. We start with simple, obvious ideas and push ourselves to think more deeply as we build complex theories about characters. We pay attention to recurring themes and details in stories. We compare how characters face their challenges and overcome them.

Wonder - Pages 248-274 There are certain things you need to take on a camping trip, and moms are the ones who help us remember to pack them and actually use them when camping. Auggie's mom is no different. Sunscreen and bug spray are two big ones. But having a rain poncho, especially with a hood, is very important for Auggie as well. Why?

Auggie is reading one of my favorite books of all time, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis. In the part quoted on page 255, it tells how the White Witch knows the Deep Magic but that "there is a magic deeper still which she did not know." The White Witch is evil and knows Magic. What might this "deeper magic" be like? And why does author R. J. Palacio include that phrase here? Here's a picture of the original cover of the book.

The woods at the Broarwood Nature Reserve are not like the woods in Central Park. Auggie calls it "real woods." Central Park is an 843 acre public park in Manhattan in New York City. Here you can see what Central Park looks like in New York and part of the woods as well.

And even though they are camping in "real woods" there are still some modern games. Well, kind of modern, anyway. Auggie says they havePac-Man and Missile Command classic arcade games.

Auggie says when the stadium lights go on in the field all at once, "I thought of that scene in Close Encounters when the alien ship lands and they're playing that music: duh-dah-doo-da-dunnn." Here is that scene from the movie, but the part Auggie mentions starts at the 5:00 mark. Skip ahead.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=mYCBgSRNjk0

The movie for the twenty-third annual Big Movie Night is The Sound of Music. A couple of the songs are mentioned including "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," "My Favorite Things," and "The Lonely Goatherd." Here is a clip of one of the songs, "My Favorite Things."   http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ikpj24WMOLw

More names for Auggie. This time it's Gollum and Alien and orc (again).

Finally, Auggie mentions an "emperor's guard Finally, Auggie mentions an "emperor's guard." In Star Wars the Emperor's Royal Guard are the characters in red in this image, and their only job is to protect the emperor. Although Auggie doesn't say exactly "Emperor's Royal Guard," does it make sense that he'd use a Star Wars reference? And considering the situation when Auggie uses the reference, why does this one seem especially important?

Homework? Answer the following question by writing a detailed paragraph or two. Cite the evidence that supports your answer from the page and paragraph in the book. Inferring Questions p 248-274 Why do you think August didn’t plan on reporting the seventh graders?

Writing Time! Being a Writer Unit 1 – Week 3 – Day 3 & 4 10:45 – 11:30

Today’s Plan Today we are going to focus on poems. Think about whether or not you might like to try writing poems.

We are going to read two funny poems from this book. “The Hippopotamushrooms” “Oh Sleek Bananaconda”

Now, I am going to read two more poems aloud Now, I am going to read two more poems aloud. This time, while I am reading, I want you to close your eyes and try to imagine or visualize what is happening in the poems. I will read them aloud twice. Keep your eyes closed for both times.

Lemonade by Rebecca Kai Dotlich We pour Its liquid sweetness From a tall Glass pitcher, Splashing Sunshine On frosty squares Of ice, Lemon light And slightly tart, We gulp its gold – Licking our lips With summer.

What did you imagine as you listened to this poem? Open your eyes What did you imagine as you listened to this poem? Think Turn and talk to your partner

Lemonade by Rebecca Kai Dotlich We pour Its liquid sweetness From a tall Glass pitcher, Splashing Sunshine On frosty squares Of ice, Lemon light And slightly tart, We gulp its gold – Licking our lips With summer. Now let’s look at the poem. What words helped you imagine what is happening in this poem?

Close your eyes again and listen carefully.

Backyard Bubbles by Rebecca Kai Dotlich One bubble Shimmies From the wand To waltz around The backyard lawn. One fragile globe Of soapy skin – A glimmering of breath within a perfect pearl, I blow again ! One more bubble Squeezes through, One blushing bead of water – blue; And then Another Rinsed in pink (Shivering With pastel ink) Dances o a summer sigh, shimmering With shades of sky, S-l-o-w-l-y slides Right out of sight; Backyard bbbles Taking flight.

Open your eyes. What did you imagine seeing? What did you imagine feeling on your skin? Let’s look at the poem.

What words in this poem help you see or feel what’s happening?

Both of these poems were about ordinary events in life. What are some ordinary events in your life that you could write about? Think . Turn and talk with the people at your table.

Writing Ideas Section Label a new page in the writing ideas section of your writer’s notebook “Ordinary Moments”. Write down as many ordinary moments that you can think of in this section.

Independent Writing For the next 15-20 minutes you will write about your choice of the following ideas. Try writing a poem. Try creating some “Scranimals.” Write about an ordinary moment. Work on a piece you started earlier. Start a new piece of writing.

Share Time Who would like to share their writing today? Remember that we have a caring community of writers. We show that we care by listening and making eye contact. Our bodies are sitting upright and we are paying attention. We are NOT drawing, writing, going through our notebooks, or any other activity.
