FORCE AND MOTION LAB 8 Exploratory Stations

Page 33 of ISN I can explain how an unbalanced force affects an object.

STATION 1  Video station - Watch this Eureka Program 6 video on gravity and then answer these questions on your lab sheet. 1. Force depends on mass and what? 2. What does the gravity of Earth cause? 3. How much is the force of gravity acting on the average apple?

STATION 2 Spring Scale View the Mass vs. Weight song by Mr. Edmond. Take notes on your lab sheet. One person holds the spring scale while another person puts weights on the scale. Answer these questions on your lab sheet. What does the spring scale measure? 2. Write down the Force in Newtons (N) for each weight. (Hint 1 gram = 0.0098 Newtons). Round each answer to the nearest whole number. Weight: Force (N): 100g 2. 200g 3. 500g

STATION 3  Ball Place the ball on the counter, where the “X” is. Answer on your lab sheet: Is this an example of balanced or unbalanced force? Why? GENTLY push the ball so that it goes across the counter to the taped line. Draw the movement on your lab sheet. Answer on your lab sheet: Is this movement an example of balanced or unbalanced force? Why?

STATION 4  Car With your lab partner, push the car back and forth GENTLY between the two of you. What direction did the car go in? Explain why you think the car went on the path that it did (Using new vocabulary words on forces). 2. Now explain what makes the car stop? Would the car eventually stop on its own? How?

STATION 5 Dominoes Set up the dominoes in a row so that they will touch each other when they fall. Write on your lab sheet: How are you going to make the dominoes fall? Knock the dominoes over. 2. Was this an example of an unbalanced or balanced force? 3. Draw your domino set up in your journal and draw arrows to show the direction of movement.

1. 45 N 15 N ____________________ 2. 65 N 10 N _____________________ 3. 10 N 50 N 4. 19.8 9.8 N STATION 6  Work out these problems: 1. Draw each diagram. Label the diagram with arrows and Newtons. 2. Show your math work! Include the forces in Newtons and the direction.

STATION 7  Tug of War! View the picture use it to answer the following scenario: Tabitha Zach  Tabitha and Zach are playing tug-of-war. If Zach pulls the rope to the right with a force of 800N and Tabitha pulls the rope to the left with a force of 800N, what will happen to the flag in the middle of the rope?  Write the sentence and fill in the blanks: “The flag will _____________ because _________________________________ .

 Spring Scale # 2 Procedure: STATION 8  Spring Scale # 2 Procedure: Place the object on the table, Use the spring scale to measure how much force is on an object at rest. (Do not lift the object off of the table) Draw the object at rest, then show the forces at work on the object and label the arrows What is the net force of an object at rest? Write on your lab sheet: “The net force of an object at rest is ___________ because _____________________________________ .”
