The necessity of Maritime Situational Awareness … What for ? 3

Most of the time awareness means : Trying to know everything, leading to overload ! 4

Unfortunately we are more focused on the connectivity rather than on the substance we get from networks Changing minds : from a « need to know » to a « need to share » 5

6 Some merchant ships around EU every day MARITIME SITUATIONAL AWARENESS ? 6

State of play 18 Member States = 128 connections + + ? 10

MARSUR Networking via MEXS - Maritime Exchange System Service & Information Exchange MS Different National Maritime Surveillance Systems (NMSS) Critical in multinational networks since changes in national services are the rule, not the exception! 1.The MEXS simplifies the NMSS connection to the network 2.The MEXS provides a generic interfaces towards different national services  Each member can freely upgrade or change his service provider behind the MEXS.  Upgrade or changes are without effect on the other members. 11

MARSUR Functional Services Create a Standardized Federated Network Enabled Capability The functional services are based on open information sharing standards best practices, lessons learned created for example within the MNE-Series (Multinational Experiment) Many of the standards used are based on work within the NATO TIDE Sprint Forum (Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) concepts, the NATO Vector Graphics specification, and Battle Space Objects) The standards are already widely used for various information sharing domain MARSUR federal functionnal services TRACK NOTIFICATION VESSEL QUERY VIDEO Collaboration services Chat File sharing VOIP SECURE NETWORK VPN 12
