UNIT 3: GUIDING QUESTIONS  What molecules are found in all living organisms?  Why do we need to eat a balanced diet that contains a variety of foods?

OBJECTIVES  SWBAT articulate the basics of biochemistry.  SWBAT define macromolecule and identify the four biological macromolecules found in ALL living things.  SWBAT identify the monomers that compose each of the major macromolecules.

INTRODUCTION  Biology is the study of LIFE “Bio” means life  Therefore, we will begin our study of life by learning about the molecules found in all living things.

BIOCHEMISTRY  Biochemistry is the chemistry of the living world. All living things use the same basic compounds for their metabolic (life) processes.  Biochemical cycles (such as photosynthesis, digestion, reproduction) require biological molecules as reactants and products.

 Atoms: Basic unit of a chemical element  Elements: Substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance and are the basic components of matter  Matter: Physical substance that occupies space and possesses mass DEFINITIONS

 Basic unit of matter ATOMS + ELEMENTS  A pure substance containing one type of atom

 Carbon is found in all organic compounds. It is the basic element of all molecules found in living things. CARBON: YOU GOTTA HAVE IT

 Key Point #1: Two or more atoms of any element chemically bonded together are known as a molecule MOLECULES

POLYMERS  Key Point #2 : Polymers are large molecules made up of many smaller, repeating units known as monomers  “Poly” means many  “Mono” means one  Another name for polymers is macromolecules  “Macro” means large

MACROMOLECULES  Key Point #3: The four macromolecules found in all living organisms are proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids Each of the four macromolecules contains the elements carbon (C), oxygen (O), and hydrogen (H) Organic molecules

PROTEINS  Key Point #4: Proteins are made up of amino acids The amino acids are joined together by peptide bonds Amino acids contain carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and also nitrogen.

CARBOHYDRATES  Key Point #5: Carbohydrates are made up of monosaccharides Another name for carbohydrates is polysaccharides Carbohydrates only contain carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen

LIPIDS  Key Points #6: Lipids are most commonly made up of fatty acids and glycerol One of the main types of lipids is fats, also known as triglycerides (1 glycerol, 3 fatty acids) Fats can be saturated or unsaturated Lipids contain mostly carbon and hydrogen, but also oxygen.

NUCLEIC ACIDS  Key Point #7: Nucleic acids are made up of nucleotides Every nucleotide contains a sugar, phosphate, and a nitrogen base

SUMMARY  All cells contain proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids  Proteins are made up of amino acids  Carbohydrates are composed of monosaccharides  Many lipids are made up of fatty acids and glycerol  Nucleic acids are composed of nucleotides

GRAPHIC ORGANIZER

MACROMOLECULES MODELING  Materials: Notebook paper, macromolecule slip, a moderately decent and non-apathetic attitude  Questions on the board: DO NOT WRITE THE QUESTION. WRITE YOUR ANSWER. For each question, certain slips will stand. STAND, WRITE, ANSWER

QUESTION 1: STAND, WRITE, ANSWER  All of the monomers stand.  Question: What term is given to a large molecule made up of smaller, repeating units known as monomers?  Answer: Polymer

QUESTION 2  All of the monosaccharides stand.  Question: Which macromolecule is made up of monosaccharides?  Answer: Carbohydrates

QUESTION 3  Protein stand.  Question: What are proteins made up of?  Answer: Amino acids

QUESTION 4  Lipids stand.  Question: What are many lipids made up of?  Answer: Glycerol and fatty acids

QUESTION 5  Nucleotides stand.  Question: Which of the macromolecules is made up of nucleotides?  Answer: Nucleic acids

QUESTION 6  Nucleotide stand  What are the three parts of a nucleotide?  Answer: Sugar, phosphate, nitrogen base

EXIT TICKET  Answer the following questions on your Exit Ticket sheet. 1.What term is given to large molecules made up of smaller, repeating units known as monomers? 2.Which of the four macromolecules is often made up of fatty acids and glycerol? 3.Proteins are made up of what monomer? 4.What are the monomers that nucleic acids are made up of? 5.Monosaccharides are the monomers of which macromolecule?
