IACS, IMO and EU requirements : Regulatory context IACS, IMO and EU requirements : The Society shall have the appropriate competence, capability and capacity to perform the required surveys under controlled conditions The Society shall have a documented system for qualification of surveyors and continuous updating of their knowledge as appropriate to the tasks they are authorized to perform. This system shall include : Theoretical training Practical training Documented evidence of satisfactory completion of training The Surveyors must be qualified for the type of ship and the type of survey to be performed

Certification scheme for NS Surveyors Requirements for initial certification : Training requirements : Studying of Rules, Regulations, Procedures and Work Instructions Self-training with CATS (Computer Assisted Training System) In-door training sessions (RTC or local training) Practical tutored training onboard Examination to be passed upon completion of the above trainings Qualification grid identifying the types of ships and the types of surveys the surveyor is qualified for Linked with ASMS reporting system Provisional certificate with limited authorizations, valid 1 year, can be issued upon completion of theoretical training, while waiting for practical training and examination

Certification scheme for NS Surveyors Requirements for maintenance of certificate : Definitive certificates have permanent validity provided the conditions below are satisfied Continuous training for updating of surveyor's knowledge Rolling out of the annual DNS Seminar Onboard monitoring carried out periodically To assess whether the surveyors are competent and capable of carrying out their tasks independently To identify needs for training and continual improvement At least one survey related to each qualification in 5 years period

Certification scheme for NS Surveyors Requirements for upgrading an existing certificate : To add new qualifications to an existing certificate, the same requirements of initial certification apply for the particular new qualification required : Studying of relevant Rules and Regulations Self-training with relevant CATS In-door training sessions (RTC or local training) Practical tutored training onboard Examination to be passed upon completion of above training

Qualification grid For each box of the qualification grid we associate certifying surveys and certified surveys Certifying surveys are those surveys that must be carried out as a trainee in order to obtain the corresponding qualification Certified surveys are those surveys the surveyor is authorized to carry out when he has the corresponding qualification

Qualification grid Qualification equivalences Some boxes of the qualification grid are considered to be equivalent according to the type of ship and survey. Equivalent qualifications are granted automatically. Suspension of certification The surveyor's certificate can be suspended : Manual suspension by the MO Automatic suspension if onboard monitoring not carried out within the specified periods How to restore a certificate after suspension : Manual reinstatement by the MO Automatic reinstatement as soon as the onboard monitoring is carried out and validated Qualifications can be suspended : Manual suspension by the MO Automatic suspension if no certifying survey carried out in the past 5 years How to restore qualifications : Manual reinstatement by the MO Manual reinstatement by the MO after the surveyor has attended a specific training on the corresponding type of survey
