Creating the Perfect Society Utopian Uprise Creating the Perfect Society

Introduction A Utopia is an imaginary place of ideal perfection (especially in laws, government, and social conditions). At the end of Anthem, Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000 have plans for creating a Utopian Society of their own. Unfortunately, with so many changes in their lives, they don’t have time to plan and create the society. Luckily, they have six teams of architects (you!) ready to compete for the job! Over the next week, your task is to create a Utopian society that will appeal to Equality and Liberty. You must convince them to choose your group’s society over all others. Be persuasive! They will choose their favorite society, and that team will receive five extra credit points on the assignment.

The First Steps Your society must adhere to the ideas expressed in Anthem. Begin by brainstorming all the things that Equality and Liberty hated about their old society. Create a top ten list that will guide you of things to stay away from! Look at the requirements. Decide who in your group will be responsible for each. The requirements are divided based on learning styles, so you should choose the learning style that best fits you. Begin brainstorming what you would like your society to be like! Create a top ten list to guide your group in what to include in the society!

The Task Create a Utopian Society which includes the following elements: A name and a flag for your society A short pledge illustrating the values and allegiances of your society A song that could be used as your “National Anthem.” An explanation of the form of government of your society, including laws and rights A monetary system and an explanation of how it will work Explanations of the type of work and recreational activities available to your citizens. A map or model of your society A commercial advertising your society to others. All information presented on a trifold board A Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting your society to the society in Anthem.

Your Role Kinesthetic Learners Visual Learners Verbal/ Linguistic Learners Musical Learners Logical/ Mathematic Learners

Kinesthetic Learners Your job is to create a 3-D model of your society. The model should include Work places Recreation areas Schools Residential areas Explore the following links to evaluate architectural models: http://www.urbandesignassociates.com/projects_Neighborhoods.asp Look at the community plans on the right, focusing specifically on the master plan images http://fortheloveofdayton.files.wordpress.com/2007/09/image_5895842.jpg This is an image of a model for Dayton, Ohio. Consider making your model similar to this. http://www.neighborhoodplanning.org/ A great website describing some of the important elements included in great neighborhoods.

Visual Learners Your job is to create a flag and an image containing the name of your society. Your flag should use colors and symbols to illustrate the values of your society. You may use any material, but the flag should be around 8.5x11 in size. Explore the following links to understand the symbolism of colors and images for your flag: http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/middle/color2.htm This website explains the meaning behind colors http://www.crossroad.to/Books/symbols1.html Great images and explanations of their meanings https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/docs/flagsoftheworld.html A website containing flags from around the world. Look at these to guide your design.

Verbal/ Linguistic Learners You are responsible for forming and explaining your society’s government. You will need to: Describe your form of government Write a list of laws (5 min.) Write a Bill of Rights describing at least five rights that every citizen is guaranteed. Complete a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting your society to the society in Anthem. You are also responsible for the presentation of the project. Explore the following links to research types of government and review the laws and rights in America: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/fields/2128.html Defines the types of governments used around the world. http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters/bill_of_rights_transcript.html A list of the United States Bill of Rights http://www.efc.be/cgi-bin/articlepublisher.pl?filename=CS-SE-03-01-1.html A great article about the need for “good laws” and examples.

Musical Learners Your job is to select a song that could be used as the “National Anthem” of your society. Be sure to explain your reasons for choosing that particular song. You should also write a short pledge illustrating the values and allegiances of your society. Finally, you are responsible for producing a commercial to advertise your society. Explore the links below to better understand pledges, national anthems, and commercials. http://www.kyrene.org/schools/brisas/sunda/flag/flag_day/page4.htm Background info and line by line explanation of the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance. http://www.national-anthems.net/ Examples of National Anthems from around the world. You can download the anthems or read the lyrics. http://www.foothilltech.org/rgeib/english/media_literacy/advertising_techniques.htm A list of advertising techniques used in commercials. Consider adding some of these techniques into your advertisement.

Logical/ Mathematical Learners You are responsible for researching and describing the monetary system for your society. What type of money will you use? How will people earn and spend money? How much will things cost? Your description should be a page long and may include charts and spreadsheets. You are also responsible for the layout of the trifold. Explore the following links to research information about various monetary systems: http://ezinearticles.com/?Understanding-The-Various-Types-Of-Currency&id=1100357 An explanation of the different types of currency and how/why they were developed. http://www.bankjr.com/pground/moneytech/ Fun website that explains present and futuristic currency options. http://www.walletpop.com/specials/food-price-comparison-around-the-world Cool website that shows the cost of various items around the world.
