General Information Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) Police officers are sworn police personnel under the authority granted by Illinois law and have the power to make arrests. The SIUE Police Department is comprised of 34 sworn police officers and 9 civilian employees. The main police facility is located at 99 Supporting Services Road just south of the main campus. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. SIUE POLICE DEPARTMENT

Community Oriented Policing Philosophy Proactive vs. Reactive –Focus on prevention Responsive to campus community Partnerships within the campus community –Weekly meetings –Presentations & Programs –Academics, Human Resources, Police Depts.

C. O. P. Philosophy (cont.) Highly visible and more approachable delivery of services. –C.O.P. programs and presentations. –Utilization of bicycle and foot patrols in addition to vehicle patrol. In the past 3 years (‘08-’10) SIUE police: –Provided 170 programs & presentations; –Were present at +900 campus events; –Performed +250 bicycle patrols; –Performed +39,800 foot patrols; and –Conducted +46,800 building checks

Escort Service The University Police provide an escort service to those individuals who feel apprehensive about walking alone on campus. The Police will escort you from campus location to campus location or to your vehicle in a campus parking lot.

Vehicle Lockouts If you lock your keys in your car, you can call the Police Department and an officer will be dispatched to your location to help retrieve them as soon as an officer is available. To receive this service, you will be required to sign a Release of Liability Form.

Vehicle Jump-Starts Jump-starts to inoperable vehicles are available through the Parking Services Department or jumper cables can be borrowed from the Police Department.

Operation Identification Valuables engraving program. Reduces theft. Improves chances of items being returned to student if stolen and recovered. Engravers available at no charge.

SIUE Campus Issues Property Crimes (93%) Theft –Unattended items Burglary (Building, Residence, M/V) –Unlocked doors (rooms/vehicles) –Items left in plain view –Unfamiliar guests Parking hangtags, cell phones, purses, laptops, CDs

SIUE Campus Issues (con’t) Crimes Against Persons (7%) Very rare. Almost all are: –Acquaintance related; –Domestic related; or –Involve the use of alcohol and/or drugs Few, if any, involve aggression by strangers.

Emergency Telephones Located in a variety of locations throughout campus. The emergency button automatically dials an emergency line which will put you in direct contact with SIUE Police and also notifies dispatch of your exact location. The non-emergency button can be used for car trouble, to obtain an escort, or any other non- emergency situation. These calls also go directly to the SIUE Police Department.

Jeanne Clery Act The “Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act” is a federal law that requires institutions of higher education in the United States to disclose campus security information including crime statistics for the campus and surrounding areas. Campus Safety Tips Never let your guard down! Be alert to their surroundings. –Visually scan the area while walking. –Stay vigilant even when talking on your cell phone. –Walk with confidence. Be prepared – have your keys in hand. Trust their instincts. –If uneasy, request a SIUE Police Escort. Don’t walk alone at night.

Campus Safety Tips (cont.) Wearing earphones connected to CD players, portable radios, i-Pods, etc. while walking can: –Distract you. –Reduce your ability to hear peripheral noises. –Significantly decrease your ability to sense potential danger. Walk towards on-coming traffic so a car can’t ease up behind you. If you’re getting robbed - Give it up! Lock their room and vehicle doors.

Campus Safety Tips (cont.) Don’t leave unfamiliar guests alone in their room. Don’t leave valuables unattended. Keep an inventory of valuable items. Don’t give out passwords, security codes, keys. Never give out personal information over the internet (SSN, credit/debit card), unless the contact was initiated by the student. Beware of internet scams & don’t believe everything you read.

Campus Safety Tips (cont.) Phishing scams. –Banks and credit card companies won’t ask for their account/personal information over the internet (unsolicited). Avoid meeting an internet acquaintance in person. –Never meet an internet acquaintance alone. –If they must meet in person, take a trusted friend. Do not let alcohol or drugs cloud their judgment and make them a victim!
