Understanding the Gateway to Alcohol and Drug Treatment Services. A New Model September 2014

THEN: Prior to the 2013/2014 decommissioning and recommissioning there were approximately 110 Alcohol and Drug services across Victoria.

NOW: 1-4 catchments in each Department of Health Region. Metro 9 catchments Rural 7 catchments. Minimum of two AOD providers in each catchment One Intake and Assessment provider in each catchment. Approx 30 services now operate (as consortiums)

HOW DOES IT WORK? Stage one reform commenced September this involved non residential adult AOD services. Stage two still to be advised. This will involve residential services and youth. Treatment types (stage 1) –Intake and Assessment –Counselling –Care and Recovery –Non Residential Withdrawal –Catchment Based Planning

HOW DOES IT WORK CONT….. Two of the service types have a lense over the whole catchment- Intake and Assessment and Planning The preferred entry point for clients is the nominated Intake and Assessment service. The service will work closely with Direct Line and other treatment providers The service is offered for clients 16 plus. (clients up to 25 may prefer a youth specific service)

SCREENING ASSESSMENT AND INITIAL TREATMENT PLANNING The Screening tool identifies severity and complexity (5 tiers of alcohol and drug severity) Risk Standard clients and complex clients Initial treatment plan

THE DEPARTMENT ENDORSED AOD SCREENING TOOL Tier Description 1 & 2 – Low to Moderate no substance dependence 3 Risk/Harm substance dependence and no complexity 4 Chronic Harm substance dependence and 1 complexity factor 5 Complex/High Severity substance dependence and 2 or more complexity factors
