The Review We will implement the outcomes of the fundamental review of nurse education to give us the right number of registered nurses who have the right skills, knowledge, confidence and competence to provide high quality nursing in a range of settings Develop new routes into nurse education (to increase nursing outturn) Ensure the education we commission focuses on the right balance of skills, knowledge, confidence and competence Develop commissioning levers for both HEI and Service to support 1&2 above and ensure continuous improvement

New Routes into Nursing Develop new routes into nurse education (to increase nursing outturn) Commission Masters/Post- graduate programmes Commission APEL routes into nursing degrees for people with FD’s (and other suitable programmes)

Type of Education Ensure the education we commission focuses on the right balance of skills, knowledge, confidence and competence Commission educational approaches that support employability and employment Commission increased focus on ‘hands on’ practice and skills assessment in degree programme Commission for enhanced learning on delivering person-centred care in a range of settings

Commissioning Levers Develop commissioning levers for both HEI and Service to support 1&2 above and ensure continuous improvement LDA/QIPF/funding levers Improve DON involvement in clinical workforce planning

A work based nursing degree programme delivered at partner HEIs that recognises prior learning and experience A commissioning strategy for training programmes as a route into the above programme Success = 120 additional nursing commissions on work based nursing programmes, in NOT open learning or part time programmes at this stage Flexible nursing programmes

APEL/APL means programme time reduced (hopefully to 18 months) Work based/ practice based – learning to be employees/learning to be competent and confident Earn as you learn – service contribution to training Grow your own – opportunities to develop local staff Compelling business case; but ROI has a ‘slow burn’ What does this mean?
