Separating Salt and Sand and Water

Aim To separate salt and sand from water

Hypothesis Predict what will be seperated.

Equipment Salt Sand Warm water Beaker x2 Funnel Filter paper Evaporating dish Bunsen burner

Method Place the salt given to you and a spatula of sand in a beaker with 15ml of warm water Fold filter paper in to quarters and place in the funnel Pour the salt, sand and water mixture in to filter paper and leave to filter through Place salt water in evaporating dish and place on top of a beaker half full of water Heat using bunsen burner until all water is evaporated from the evaporating dish Weigh the salt using digital scales and record what you observed in the experiment

Results Example The salt and sand were separated… The filter paper ……….. The salt passed through the filter paper and collected in ………… We collected …… g of salt

Conclusion We were able to separate salt and sand from water by ……….. This worked because the salt dissolved in the water and passed through …….. The sand did not dissolve and was trapped by …………..

Discussion The solvent was… The solute was… The solution contained…
