Main Ideas “I Am A Native of North America” The most important part of life for human beings is Love. “In Search of Our Mother’s Gardens” Despite hardships, black women have expressed the creativity that is essential to the human experience.

Native Page 113 Main idea: The most important part of life for human beings is love. 1. It is important to love and respect nature. 2. The earth is a gift from the Great Spirit. It is a “second mother.” We show our thanks for the gifts of nature by using them with respect. 3. Love nourishes the human spirit. 4. Gardens Page 117 Main Idea: Despite hardships, black women have expressed the creativity that is essential to the human experience. 1. Alice Walker’s mother was skillful, talented, and hardworking. 2. She sewed towels, sheets, overalls, and quilts and canned fruits and vegetables. 3. Long ago in Africa, a mother may have been a poet or an artist and passed on her creativity to her daughter. 4. Maybe the mother “painted vivid and daring decorations in oranges and yellows and greens” or sang or wove beautiful mats or told “the most ingenious stories.”

Gardens Page Walker realizes that she has absorbed not only her mother’s stories but also the way in which her mother told them and the feeling that they needed to be written down. You might think that the stories our parents tells us are like gifts. 2. Walker realizes that her mother’s garden was an expression of her creativity. You might think that a work of art can be crated in the course of doing jobs which many people take for granted.

Gardens Page Walker realizes that her mother’s gardening is work for her soul and inspired by an imagined sense of beauty. You might think that Walker seems to be saying that her mother’s creativity made her mother beautiful.
