HEAT

What is heat? Heat may be defined as energy in transit from a high temperature object to a lower temperature object (a form of energy that is transferred by a difference in temperature).

What does bill nye have to say about heat? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1eAOygDP5s Given what Bill Nye had to say. Let’s add to our definition: Even cold things have heat. The molecules merely move more slowly. The more molecules the more heat energy.

Baffle Your Skin Experiment What did you notice when you took part in this experiment? Most students noticed that the hand that had been in the cold water for approximately one minutes time before entering the room temperature water, felt much warmer in the room temperature water than the other hand which had been in hot water.

Extension Question Given your experience during the Baffle Your Skin experiment, how would you respond to the extension question on the following slide?

Extension Question If Midori lies in the sun for 20 minutes and Erin lies in the shade for 20 minutes before they both decide to go swimming, how will the water feel to each girl? Why?

Model Answer: Extension Question 3 If Midori lies in the sun for 20 minutes while Erin lies in the shade for 20 minutes before they each decide to go swimming, the water will likely feel warmer to Erin than it does to Midori. After sitting in the sun the water will feel cool against Midori’s skin, however since Erin has been sitting in the cool shade the water will likely feel luke warm or warm to Midori.

So…what should we take away from all of this? How hot something seems to be when you touch it depends on how warm your skin already is!

Now That We Know Some of The Basics, Let’s Further Explore! Copy the “Identifying Temperatures” table into your science duo-tang and work with a desk partner to fill in the chart. When you have completed the chart we will take it up and discuss.

Definitions Locate the following definitions and take them down into your duo-tang. Heat, Thermal energy, Conduction, Convection, Radiation, Transferred, Temperature, Boiling Point, Melting Point

Difficult Definitions to Find Transferred – Passed from one thing to another Thermal Energy -Thermal energy is what we call energy that comes from heat.

For Homework Respond to the following homework question: Does knowing the predicted outdoor temperature help you plan an outdoor activity? Give examples of both summer and winter. Write 2 paragraph.
