DPACC vNF Overview and Proposed methods Keith Wiles – v0.5

Data Plane Acceleration Overview What are the goals of DPACC? Identify NFV use cases to illustrate Data Plane Acceleration and proposal solution Create a common and performance oriented model Agree on the method(s) to move control/data between guest (vNF) and host with acceleration support Provide a clean standard solution for vNF deployments Create a common framework from which all NFVs can utilize Suggest a solution(s) to OPNFV as a document and PoC 2 Proposal to OPNFV (overview)

VM with Standard VirtIO 3 Support standard vNFs –Today VirtIO is used via network I/F –No changes required in the VM to support acceleration –We have vHost-User already SRL is a critical layer IMO –Need to have a clean abstraction for VM – VM –Does not need to know about hardware as it uses the SAL to transport packets to external devices SAL In my opinion is not optional –An abstraction needs to be in place for hardware to software –All of the acceleration software or hardware can be define in this layer

VM with VirtIO++ and VM based SAL 4 SAL in the vNF + enhanced VirtIO++ –New VirtIO gives more device support –SAL at this layer provides abstraction to VirtIO and/or the direct access to hardware e.g. SR-IOV –Could eliminate all of the host layers if the vNF application does not require them to be present
