What is the school doing … Right mindset Confidence Motivation Stress & Time Mgt Teacher Deployment Class arrangements Options & Opportunities EMOTIONAL PHYSICAL PUPILS INTELLECTUAL Communications With Parents School Leaders’ Involvement Subject Mastery Exam Skills

A pupil who can do well … Drive and interest to give off the best The right attitude Consistent effort – goes the extra mile Stays focused and pays attention – listens to teacher Good quality work – prompt and neat Keeps a schedule and tracks his /her performance Good time & stress management Reads widely

Subjects taken at PSLE English Lang 100% Mother Tongue 100 % Maths 100 % Science 100 % Higher mother tongue is not included in the computation of PSLE aggregate score Any aggregate of 250 and above will be given HMT or 3rd language option

PSLE Aggregate Incorporates performance of pupils in all 4 subjects Allows pupils to be ranked fairly

Different subjects have different levels of difficulty Why use T- Score Different subjects have different levels of difficulty So are the spread of marks from the average mark, i.e. the standard deviation (spread = standard deviation)

What is T-Score It gives the relative position of a pupil’s performance as compared to the performance of all the other pupils in that subject The raw mark obtained in the exam only shows how good the pupil is in that subject, not how good he is as compared to others Elaborate on SPREAD: As how ell the pupils’ performance are spread across the possible mark range. In some sense, spread denotes how precise a given test (as an instrument) Proceed s to the next slide to illustrate the concept of SPREAD as Precision of instrument.. The extent to which the test is ble to distinguish the performance of the pupils.

PSLE T-Score T-score 50 + 10 ( X - Y ) Z X = pupil’s mark for the subject Y = average mark scored by all pupils Z = spread of marks around the average mark (Standard Deviation)

T- Score Pupil’s mark for the subject = 80 Average mark scored by all pupils = 60 Spread of marks around the average mark = 20 T-score = 50 + 10 (80 - 60) 20 = 60

A need for standardisation of the raw scores Transformed Score or T-Score The previous slide showed that different subjects appeared to have different standard and thus there is a need to standardise the marks before aggregating them. This is done through the use of T-Score.

Example 1 Subject Raw Score Mean SD T-Score EL 80 50 20 65 Maths 90 19 71 Science 60 15 70 MT (CL) 63 Aggregate score for this pupil is ….. 65 + 71 + 70 + 63 = 269

Example 2 Subject Raw Score Mean SD T-Score EL 80 50 20 65 Maths 90 19 71 Science 60 15 70 MT (CL) 63 Pupil scores 90 marks for both Maths & Science but has a higher T-score in Maths

Example 3 Subject Raw Score Mean SD T-Score EL 80 50 20 65 Maths 90 19 71 Science 60 15 70 MT (CL) 63 Pupil scores 80 marks for both EL & CL but has a higher T-score in EL

Aggregate calculation English Paper: Ave marks, Y = 85; Std Dev, Z = 25 Maths Paper: Ave marks, Y = 50; Std Dev, Z = 10 T(Subject) = 50 + 10 (X – Y)/Z Raw score (X) EL MA Total Pupil A 95 (A*) 80 (A) 175 Pupil B 90 83 173 T-score EL MA Total Pupil A 54 80 134 Pupil B 52 83 135 A pupil scoring 3A* could end up having an aggregate less than one scoring 3A.
