Rankings: Urged to Rethink Who We Are… Keio University Led Japan’s modernization Supplied industry management What next?

A Little History Arrival of Commodore Perry in 1853 saw both the arrival of the threat of colonization and the industrial revolution. Japan was quick to respond… Kanrin Maru

Yukichi Fukuzawa Founded Keio in Introduced Western science and institutions. Provided the basic principles of modernization. Believed in the independence of individuals. Believed in the importance of business. Created industrialists and introduced modern institutional systems such as patents, joint stock company, and book keeping.

Keio Has Grown into a Comprehensive University Letters Economics Law Business and Commerce School of Medicine Science and Technology Policy Management Environment and Information Studies Nursing and Medical Care Pharmacy Letters Economics Law Human Relations Business and Commerce Medicine Science and Technology Business Administration (KBS) Media and Governance Law School Health Management System Design and Management (SDM) Media Design (KMD) Pharmaceutical Sciences 10 Faculties14 Graduate Schools

Keio Has Enjoyed Success in … Geared to train a large number of middle managers for the manufacturing economy Strong demand for its graduates Stable, life-long employment Focused on general vs. professional education Large classrooms and systematic education Education in the mother tongue Recognized by Nikkei in 2014 to have the strongest university brand in Japan

Here Come the Global Rankings… Higher education and research in the mother tongue (democratization of knowledge) has been the source of economic and societal success. This earlier success is now haunting Japan in the rankings systems.

Recipe for Past Success no Longer Valid? The issues to be solved are increasingly global in nature. Globalization of economic activities. Need for global solutions and talents that can operate effectively in a globalized environment.

Chosen by the Japanese government as one of the thirteen “Type A ” research universities for the “Top Global University Project.” Vowed to enhance the sustainability of the world through “jitsugaku” (science). Top Global University Project

Redefining Our Mission Not (only…) to become internationally famous, but because the world faces issues that need to be resolved at global levels.

Need for a Competitive Knowledge Infrastructure University administrators are now faced with a challenge to build a knowledge infrastructure that takes advantage of today’s networked environment.

In the Age of Cloud Computing… Knowledge connected and accumulated in the cloud. “Network externality” of information, i.e., the value of a piece of information increases as connections increase. Predominantly, the literature is in English. Frankly fearful that the platforms are out of our control.

Desktop Applications Abstract Database Metadata Platform Digital Archive Platform Authoring Support Platform Institutional Repository R2R communications Researcher SNS Electronic Journal Platform Metadata Standardization Researcher ID/Digital Object ID Desktop Applications Desktop Applications Need for a New Infrastructure

Changing Face of Science Big data science the end of logical positivism…? Emerging trends such as open science.

Collaboration in Building a Foundation A platform on which a diverse range of knowledge creation can co-exist and interact. Multilingual platform that honors multiple styles of expression. Open and transparent platforms that researchers can use without the fear of exploitation.
