SIMON BENSON NATIONAL POLITICAL EDITOR THE DAILY TELEGRAPHAPRIL 15 Confidential maps reveal Badgerys Creek will rival JFK airport in size. Construction will require moving 100 million cubic metres of earth. Final plans reveal airport could take 80M passengers per year by Negotiations with Sydney Airport Corporation, which has the first right of refusal to build and operate the airport, are believed to be close to an initial agreement, with the government understood to be prepared to wear the estimated $1.5 billion cost of preparing the site if the private operators fund the rest. The construction of Sydney’s second airport have revealed the nation’s largest earthmoving and excavation project since the Snowy Mountains scheme will begin next year. A site map shows stage 1 of the Badgerys Creek site marked “for cost purposes only” includes a single east-west runway of 3700m and a small domestic and international terminal as well as a cargo terminal. The runway will be able to accommodate the largest plane in the sky — the A380. A 3km transport tunnel has been earmarked on the schematics for a future underground rail link to the airport. The total cost for the first stage, which will be completed within eight years and be able to take 10 million passengers a year, will come in at around $4 billion, it has been revealed. The plans also reveal the final configuration that would elevate the Badgerys Creek airport to a world-ranking facility, with twin parallel 3.7km runaways by The airport’s configuration — with a terminal flanked by runways on either side — is based on world’s best design for easy passenger movements and quicker loading and departures than established aviation hubs. The maps also show a future M12 motorway route marked to the north eastern end, which would link the M4 and M5 motorways while also servicing the airport.
