Dating Allows people to learn what qualities you like in a partner Abstinence = postponing sexual activity Learning refusal skills helps teenagers practice sexual abstinence

Character Traits Related to Dating Self-esteem = the way that one feels about oneself Poor self-concept = having a negative image of oneself Compromise = each person gives up something to get something Trust = the best way to gain another person’s trust is to be honest

Pregnancy in Teenagers Babies born to youth parents are more likely to have lower than average birth weight Fetal alcohol syndrome = condition that develops in a baby born of a mother that drinks alcohol during pregnancy Smoking will harm an unborn baby Even taking aspirin during pregnancy puts the unborn baby at risk

Consequences of Teenage Parenting Emotional = feelings of isolation, despair, and frustration Future = dropping out of school to have a job to pay for child support Social = giving up activities with friends Financial = the younger a girl is when she has a baby, the more likely she is to live in poverty Physical = toxemia (pregnancy induced high blood pressure) can develop during pregnancy

Teenage Parenthood Social Services = government agency that helps with financial assistance Helps secure child support payments
