HONEY - BEE

SOCIAL ORGANIZATION The honey bee is a social insect that can survive only as a member of a community, known as a colony. Honey Bee

Members of a Honey Bee Colony Honey bees live in hives. Each hive contains a queen, female workers, and male drones. The queen lays up to 1,000 eggs a day. Worker bees gather food, make honey, tend eggs, and guard the hive. Drones mate with the queen, and then die.

Structure of Honey Bee

Life cycle of Honey Bee A bee’s life has seve-ral stages. A larva hatches out of the egg. The larva looks a little like a worm. The larva becomes a pupa covered by a hard case. The pupa becomes an adult bee and breaks out of the case.

Honeybee 2 - a honeybee collecting nectar from tiny white flowers lit by the sun

Castes The honey bee community consists of three structurally different forms-the queen (reproductive female), the drone (male), and the worker (nonreproductive female). These castes are associated with different functions in the colony; each caste possesses its own special instincts geared to the needs of the colony. The Queen The queen is the only sexually productive female in the colony and thus is the mother of all drones, workers, and future queens. Her capacity for laying eggs is outstanding; her daily output often exceeds 1500 eggs, the weight of which is equivalent to that of her own body.
