Journal: Text vs. Film 1. How does the film portray act 1 scene 1 differently than the text? What does it have in common? 2. Do you agree with the director’s take on this scene? Why or why not? If not, what changes might you make?

Act 1 Scene 1 Journal 1. From Benvolio’s description in Act 1 Scene 1 of Romeo’s behavior, and his father’s confirmation of it, list four of the characteristics of a young man in love. 2. Which of the first twelve lines spoken by Romeo (p lines ) sum up the theme of the play as a whole? Why?

Act 1 Re-Write Choose a scene from Act 1: either scene 2 (between Capulet and Paris: pages 40-42), or scene 3 (between Lady Capulet, the Nurse, and Juliet – pg , lines ) Rewrite the scene in your own language. Format your script in the same way as Shakespeare. Include all stage directions. Do not copy from either the original text or modern version in the book.

Queen Mab Journal In Act 1 Scene 4, Mercutio’s bright spirits contrast with Romeo’s melancholy. Answer the following questions, citing evidence from the text. a. What is Mercutio’s recommended cure for love? b. What are their attitudes toward dreams? c. How does the Queen Mab speech demonstrate vividly, memorably, and imaginatively his contention that “dreamers often lie”

Performance Reflection How could you or your peers have improved their performance? Cite specific examples.

R&J Questions 1.Describe how the technical elements of scenery, props, costumes, make-up, sound, and lighting communicate setting. Give specific examples. 2.Describe how performance elements of blocking, dialect, diction, facial expressions, and gestures create a believable character. Give specific examples. 3.Does the film version stay faithful to the original script? Give examples to support your theory. 4.Why do you think the director decided to create a modern setting but maintain the original text? Was this a good idea? Explain your reasons. 5.If you were to direct a movie version of Romeo and Juliet what would you keep the same from Shakespeare’s original script and what would you change and why?
