Introduction The Great Wall of China was one of the 7 wonders of the medieval world. The Great Wall of China was (and still is today) the longest man-made structure on earth. It was built during the Ming, Jin, and Qin dynasties. Those dynasties built the Wall bit by bit which formed the Great Wall of China. Today only 1/3 of the wall is left standing.

A Seventh Wonder of the Ancient World The great Wall of China was built to keep out barbarian nomads or other invaders. The Great Wall of China today is known as one of the greatest structures built ever. The soldiers saw fires and heard gunshots. If a soldier saw 1 fire and heard 1 gunshot, it meant an army of 100 or more soldiers were attacking. The Ming Wall alone, was 4,200 miles long! That could make it from Denver, Colorado to Washington D.C. Maryland. The Great Wall of China got the nickname longest cemetery on earth because so many people died working on it. Recently it is said that 400,000 to 1,000,000 died working on it. The emperor at the time was Qin Shi Huang.

What It Took To Build Great Wall The Great Wall of China has been here for thousands of years. Today only 1/3 of the wall stands today because of floods and collapses. Efforts today are trying to save the wall. The Great Wall of China used millions of bricks. It is said that if you take the bricks from the Great Wall of China you could build a 5 foot Wall and it would circle the world. The workers had to make bricks out of whatever they could find. If you add up todays money for building the Wall it would total some 6.3 billion dollars.

The Longest Cemetery on Earth The Great Wall of China’s highest point is 3,280 feet high. The walkways alone are 25 feet high while the the towers-there 35 feet taller. Over 2 million people worked on the Great Wall, over half of them died. The great wall had 7,062 lookout towers.
