Overview of the WVDE Interim Assessment Resources and the Interim Assessments Stacey Murrell, Ed.D. Interim Assessments Coordinator Office of Assessment and Research

A Balanced Assessment System Common Core State Standards specify K-12 expectations for college and career readiness All students leave high school college and career ready Teachers and schools have information and tools they need to improve teaching and learning Summative: College and career readiness assessments for accountability Interim: Flexible and open assessments, used for actionable feedback Formative resources: Supporting classroom- based resources to improve instruction 2

WVDE INTERIM RESOURCES WEBPAGE

When attempting to access the interim assessment resources, users must sign in using their addresses and passwords. They can then view or print the interim resources for classroom use.

Note: These resources are not benchmarks. They are practice questions written to the Claims and Targets using item specifications. They use the same format and terms that will be used on the summative test.

Purpose of WVDE Interim Resources Questions aligned and/or written to Claims and Targets Gives students exposure to how the questions will be written/standards be assessed Practice opportunities to learn how to answer new question types, like constructed response, select text, matching tables, etc.

Claim 1 Literary Text Cluster Contains multiple choice and constructed response questions. Excerpt from Grade 3

Claim 3 Speaking and Listening Contains 3 audio passages that students must listen to in order to answer the questions. Question types are single-response multiple choice, multiple- response multiple choice, two-part multiple choice, and matching tables.

Practice Performance Task Allows practice learning how to take notes, how to read 2 or more sources, how to answer constructed response questions, and how to write an essay using evidence from source documents.
