SOP STC Spring 2015

Agenda o Welcome o What’s New and Some Review o Testing Resources o Review of Registration Procedures o Troubleshooting o Q/A

Moving From Fall to Spring Writing In Pearson, there is only one Writing Session. *This was new starting in Fall 2014.* You will need to “clean up” your Fall Writing before you begin Spring Writing. ◦Remove anyone who is still in “Ready” status. ◦You may want to add “Spring” to your group names to help differentiate. ◦If you test Writing in a paper/pencil format, pay close attention to the calendar.

SOP Spring Writing Term Graduates – 1 st Attempt Term Graduates – 2 nd Attempt Grade 8 and EOC March 2 nd – March 13 th April 6 th – April 24 th March 16 th – March 27 th Prompt and M/C Term grad: student expected to graduate by 08/30/2015

Writing Writing Score Reports: ◦No longer in the “On Demand” section. ◦Published reports will be updated more frequently. VADOE said they will be updated every M, W, and F mornings. ◦VADOE reports this is a cost-saving measure.

SOP Spring Non-Writing All SOP’s will test Spring Non-Writing: May 18  June 12 This includes term grads and regular administration.

Remember…. The following tests are no longer administered: Grade 3: Science, History Grade 5: Writing Grade 3 VMAST: Reading, Math Grade 4 VMAST: Reading, Math Grade 5 VMAST: Reading, Math Middle School: US HST I, US HST II Grade 6 VMAST: Reading, Math Grade 7 VMAST: Reading, Math EOC: any 2001 SOL based EOC History (all EOC History tests should be based on 2008 SOL’s)

Grade 6 Math – Computer Adapted Test If you need to administer the Grade 6 Math test, pay careful attention to the codes on the SDU File. Test CodeSOL Test NameSOL Test Format 6136Grade 6 Math CATOnline Only (regular, audio, read aloud) 6126Grade 6 MathPaper Only (regular, audio, read aloud, large print, Braille) 6156Grade 6 Plain English Math CAT Online Only (regular, audio, read aloud) 6146Grade 6 Plain EnglishPaper Only (regular, audio, read aloud, large print, Braille)

More Math….. o Examiner directions for paper/pencil Grades 6 &7 math are online only. (Page 19 in the Supplement to the Examiner’s Manual for Grades 6, 7, & 8 Tests.) o There is a new, “No Calculator” icon for the Grade 6 math CAT. This icon will be seen on Questions 1 – 8. o The computer reads the “Section Break” as item #9. Afterwards, Questions 10 – 54 are calculator friendly. Students need to ask for a calculator at this point. (There is a check box, but the computer will move on regardless of the answer.). Examiners/proctors should monitor closely.

10 This is an image of the screen that will appear between the first and second section of the test.

More Math….. o On the Grade 6 CAT, there is no ___ of ____ at the bottom of the page. o Students may not “go back” to previous items on the CAT. o If a student is “kicked off” of the CAT, s/he should resume at last item s/he saw. o There is no Seal Code for Grade 6 Math. Grades and Grade 7 still require a Seal Code between the two parts of the test. o New Grade 6 Math Blueprint went into effect Fall 2014.

Calculators o Remember the list of approved calculators can be found on the VDOE website. o The Test Implementation Manual contains Table 8 which lists state approved calculators and instructions for prepping calculators for use during testing. o The directions provided in this table must be followed carefully so that calculator memory has been cleared and APPs have been removed. Personnel responsible for this task should note rely on memory of procedures used in the past.

Examiners and Proctors Examiner – responsible for administering SOL tests according to the procedures outlined in the Examiner’s Manual and for maintaining security of test materials. Proctor – works with the examiner in administering the SOL tests and assists in maintaining an appropriate testing environment A proctor may be called upon to verify that: ◦The test was administered according to the procedures outlined in the Examiner’s Manual ◦The security of the test materials was maintained, and ◦Students did not receive inappropriate assistance on the test

Examiners and Proctors All examiners and proctors should have individual copies of the Test Implementation Manual. Training expectations for examiners and proctors are the same. When in doubt, consult the Test Implementation Manual.

Statewide Tornado Drill Tuesday, March 9:45

Alternate and Alternative Assessments o VAAP is still a paper/pencil test. Virginia continues to research and work with other states to move towards the best model for assessing students with significant cognitive disabilities. o Beginning 2015 – 16, there will be no VGLA for students with disabilities. o Beginning 2015 – 16, VGLA will remain an option for LEP students in Grades 3-8 for Reading.

Alternate and Alternative Assessments o VMAST continues to be an option for EOC Reading and Algebra I for students who are working towards a Standard Diploma with Credit Accommodations. (*all documentation must be included in student’s IEP*) o VMAST continues to be an option for Math 8 and Reading 8 for students who are working towards a Modified Standard Diploma. (MSD is only an option for students who entered ninth grade for the first time before the 2013 – 2014 school year.)

ELP Information Resources and Manual can be found online at: annual_admin_of_elp_assessments_spring_2015.pdf (*this manual was updated 11/04/2014)

ELP Information NEW  Online Access for ELLs 2.0 Test o Operational during school year o Online test and will require headphones and a microphone o Paper test will be available for students with a documented need (form is still being developed) o Kindergarten students will continue to take a paper/pencil test. o New grade level clusters are: 1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8, and o Listening and Reading responses will be entered and scored online. o Speaking responses will be recorded and scored at DRC. (Data Recognition Corporation) o

Technical Information o Refer to from Merilee Fox (last week) for information on Proctor Caching. o JAVA Critical Patch Update for TestNav 7 04/14/2015 and 07/14/205 o TestNav 8 Designed for use on mobile devices Items are not image-based (more like a web page for each item/depends on device) Thousands of test items have to be converted Five step conversion process that takes time and money

On the Horizon o TEI for History SOL tests will be reviewed by summer committees (2015) and field tested Spring o Revisions to SOL’s occur on a seven year cycle. Revised standards must be approved by June: o 2015 – History o 2016 – Math o 2017 – Science and English

On the Horizon o School divisions are required to assess progress in areas where no SOL test is administered. (NOTE: SOP’s is considered an LEA, but not a school division.) o VADOE’s survey results show a variety of types and implementation schedules. o In rare instances, the SOP may need to work with the home school division to ensure students are assessed. o Virginia is moving away from Student Growth Percentiles and moving towards using Progress Tables for federal accountability and teacher evaluation.

On the Horizon Bills that are still “alive”, but not yet law: o Current House Bill that would expand expedited retakes to lower grades. o Current Senate Bill that would waive the 140 clock hour requirement if the school division can prove the student learned the content. o Current House Bill would allow science to be tested in grades six or seven if student has covered the content. o Current Senate Bill would prohibit the State BOE from adopting the Common Core without General Assembly Approval. o ESEA Waiver is due 03/31/2015 and if approved, would be for the next four years.

Resources CAT and TEI: Alternate and Alternative Assessments: Manuals, Calendars, and other Administration Resources: Reporting Resources: For Teachers:

Troubleshooting The STC at each school can clear test alerts. Any audio administration will automatically result in an alert. To clear the alert:  Documenting Test Accommodations (Manual Section 6.2.2)  Online: Student Registration  Student  Assigned Test  Edit (far right) NOTE: Alerts and irregularities are two different things. Any irregularity should still be filed with Merilee Fox. This is slightly different information that what was provided in the Fall 2014 training.

Troubleshooting o Remember any paper/pencil administration must have documentation of need form. o Remember to train any personnel who will be administering or proctoring a test. o Remember to complete any applicable forms from the Appendices in the TIM. o Remember to “clear out“ any rooms where testing will occur. o Remember some tests at the elementary level can be given over two days. o Remember the difference between retest and recovery. o Remember to have required information before filing an irregularity. More information about the issues above can be found in the PPT from the Fall 2014 training. Laurie if you need a copy.
