DISTRICT 1SR U.S. COAST GUARD AUXILIARY DIVERSITY AWARD

Why Diversity  Helps recognize the untapped talents of current Flotilla members  Assists in the recruitment of new members  Assists in the retention of present members

NACO 3 STAR AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN DIVERSITY  Purpose of the Award  The NACO 3 Star Award for Excellence in Diversity is an annual award to recognize Flotillas for Distinction in Managing and Valuing Diversity

Criteria  Flotillas receive the 3 Star Award of Excellence in Diversity must accomplish a minimum of (3) Action Items in each Group Category (Goals)  Goal 1: Create a Positive Environment  Goal 2: Value all Members  Goal 3: Promote Individual Success

Goal 1 Create a Positive Environment 1.Appoint a Flotilla Diversity Advisor 2.Publish at least one article on diversity in your Flotilla Newsletter per year 3.Conduct one in-flotilla Diversity Member Training session per year 4.Target all local neighborhoods in the flotilla’s recruiting action plan. 5.Document a minimum of 6 meeting per year with at least 50% attendance 6.Flotilla Commander and/or Vice Flotilla Commander must attend leadership Training at District or National per AUXDATA

Goal 2 Value all Members 1.Document informal awards and recognition program 2.List a minimum of 2 routine communications with all members – newsletter, meeting notes, telephone trees 3.Conduct exit interviews of members leaving the auxiliary- forward to DSO-HR via SO-HR 4.Maintain 90% membership each year, maximum 10% disenrollment or retirement 5.Show 65% of members involved in Aux Programs according to Auxdata 6.List a minimum of 4 Fellowship activities sponsored by the Flotilla per year for all members, families and friends

Goal 3 Promote Individual Success 1.Assign a formal mentor to each new member for the first year of membership 2.Utilize the member involvement plan to help new members plan their involvement and training 3.Provide all staff officers and committee members with written goals for the year 4.Provide all staff officers with written job descriptions each year 5.Establish a flotilla mentoring program for potential new staff officers 6.Provide adequate access to meeting for members or potential members with disabilities

Remember  Only 3 of the 6 action steps required from each Goal area  Document as you go for easy backup for award submission  Get all Flotilla members involved in the process

How to Apply  Flotilla Commander to submit a letter of activities related to diversity. Outline the minimum of (3) action items for each of the Goal areas. Submit any and all backup items related to the action step and goal.  Include Flotilla Name, Location, District, Division and Number  Documentation to be sent from the Flotilla Commander to Division Commander

Deadline  Award Application may be submitted at any time

Award Presented  Awards are Presented at NACON in January each year to the DCO on behalf of the Flotilla
