Atoms / Elements Different number of protons Protons found in nucleus # of protons = atomic number Since atom is electrically neutral: #protons = # electrons.
Isotopes. The Nucleus  The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom is unique to each type of element  BUT, the nuclei of the same type of element.

The Nuclear Atom Atoms differ from one another by their number of: 1.Protons 2.Neutrons 3.Electrons Electrons have a NEGATIVE charge. The MASS of an electron.
Parts of the Atom: Properties  Protons: –Positive charge –Located in nucleus –Mass = 1 amu (Atomic Mass Unit)  Neutrons –No charge (neutral) –Inside.
Atomic Number & Mass Number All atoms consist of protons and electrons- most also have neutrons Protons & neutrons- in the small dense nucleus- similar.

Isotopes. What is an isotope? Not all atoms of an element are identical. Some elements have isotopes. Isotopes (iso means “same”) are atoms with the same.

Presentation transcript:

 An arrangement of elements in which the elements are separated based on properties

 The atomic number of every element represents the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom of that element.

 The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom. Number of neutrons = mass number – atomic number

 Electrons in an atom are equal to the number of protons.

 The nucleus is made of p + n  2 protons are close together there is a strong attraction  Nuclear Force

 Atoms (of the same element) that have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons. Do Isotopes have different mass numbers?

 Hydrogen  Hydrogen-1 (Hydrogen)  Hydrogen-2 (Deuterium)  Used as a moderator in nuclear reactors  Hydrogen-3 (Tritium)  Used in the production of Hydrogen bombs

 There are 3 isotopes of Oxygen. Oxygen-16, Oxygen-17 and Oxygen 18. Write each in shorthand notation.  There are 3 isotopes of Chromium. Chromium- 50, Chromium-52 and Chromium-53. How many neutrons are in each isotope?

 One twelfth of the mass of a carbon-12 atom

 Calculate a weighted average  Not each isotope is as common as the next  You need to know the mass of each isotope and its natural abundance.
