doc.: IEEE 11-14/1229r1 Submission Background and Objectives 4x OFDM symbol duration may enhance efficiency for longer payloads and may have benefit of less CP overhead and finer frequency granularity [1][2]. Relative to 4x OFDM symbol duration, current 1x OFDM symbol duration may have less padding bits and shorter payload duration for short packets. Methods for supporting dynamic OFDM symbol duration may result in greater overall efficiency. September 2014 Alan Jauh et. al., MediaTekSlide 2

doc.: IEEE 11-14/1229r1 Submission Method 1 (Per Packet Based) Define one bit Symbol_duration in SIG-A to specify –Symbol_duration = 0 : OFDM symbol duration 3.2us –Symbol_duration = 1 : OFDM symbol duration 12.8us CP ratio –Specify 4x mode CP ratio Normal GI : 1/4 (TBD) Short GI : 1/16 (TBD) –Define 2 bits of CP_ratio in SIG-A to specify the CP ratio and remove SGI indication CP_ratio = 0 : 1/4 CP_ratio = 1 : 1/8 CP_ratio = 2 : 1/16 CP_ratio = 3 : 1/32 September 2014 Alan Jauh et. al., MediaTekSlide 3

doc.: IEEE 11-14/1229r1 Submission Method 2 (NAV protected) This operation can be protected by a new MAC protocol, e.g. use CTS-to-self with indication bit(s) –AP send CTS-to-self to reserve TXOP for legacy devices –11ax devices decode the indication bit(s) to override normal CTS- to-self operation and decode the NAV protected packet(s) For example, the 80MHz OFDM packet with clock scale down ¼ can be used in each 20MHz BW With clock scale down ¼ can reuse the design to get –1/4 frequency granularity –4x CP length in time September 2014 Alan Jauh et. al., MediaTekSlide 4

doc.: IEEE 11-14/1229r1 Submission Summary Two methods to enable dynamic 1x/4x OFDM symbol duration are proposed. Method 1 modifies per-packet PHY preamble and enables dynamic switching between 1x and 4x OFDM symbol duration. Method 2 enables 4x OFDM symbol duration in NAV protected periods. With 1/4 clock scale down from wider bandwidth mode, it is possible for design reuse. September 2014 Alan Jauh et. al., MediaTekSlide 5
