Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Conflict

Examples of Person vs Person (interpersonal) conflict Harry vs Voldemort: Harry has struggled with Voldemort his entire life. From the time he was a baby Voldemort has been trying to kill him. Now that he has come back into power, their conflict is coming to a climax. This conflict is shown multiple times through out the movie. Examples include: The last battle against Voldemort when he believes he has killed Harry Potter, when Voldemort tried to kill Harry as a baby, etc. This conflict is resolved when Voldemort dies because Harry has destroyed all the Horcruxes with the help of his friends Harry vs Snape: Harry and Snape have always had conflict with each other. It is not until the end of the movie that we learn Snape was trying to protect Harry all along. The conflict comes from Harry believing that Snape is a supporter of Voldemort and that he deliberately killed Dumbledore. This conflict is resolved after Snape dies and Harry sees the past through Snape’s tears. He realizes that Snape loved his mother and that he had to kill Dumbledore in order to save the Wizarding World from the dark lord. Harry also realizes that Snape was protecting him all along.

Examples of Person vs Self (Internal) conflict Harry vs himself: Harry struggles with himself the entire series. He struggles with why he is the chosen one and the responsibility that comes with it. He is unsure if he has the ability and confidence in himself to save the wizarding world. Two examples of specific internal conflict Harry has is at the end of the movie when he decides to meet with Voldemort in the forest and ultimately give his life for the best of the Wizarding World. Harry believes that while he is alive, Voldemort can not die, thus he must give his life to save everyone. Another minor internal conflict Harry struggles with is saving Draco’s life. When the room of requirement is collapsing and in flames Harry returns to save Draco from death. Draco vs Himself: Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter have never gotten along through out the series. Draco’s family are big Voldemort supporters and Draco belongs to Slytherin house, the rival house of Harry’s house, Griffyndor. However in this movie Draco struggles internally with turning Harry Potter into Voldemort. When he is asked to identify Harry he tells the death eaters that he is unsure if it is Harry, when he knew it was. He struggled internally with turning Harry in. This conflict is resolved when Draco says he doesn’t know if it is Harry.

Examples of person vs society (external) Voldemort vs the Wizarding World: This is an example of person vs society because Voldemort wants to rid the wizarding world of “mud- bloods” (wizards born of only one magical parent). He uses dark magic to hurt and kill others instead of using his magic responsibly or in a positive way. Voldemort’s desire for a perfect society goes against the laws of the current wizarding society. You should think of this as a conflict like Hitler had with having a pure race, or racism. Voldemort, in short, was a racist. An example of this is shown all through out the movie when Voldemort is killing mud-bloods and other wizards who get in his way of ruling the wizarding world. This conflict is resolved when Voldemort is killed.

Examples of person vs fate/supernatural (external) Harry vs the prophesy: "The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies... and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not... and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives... the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies [...] " This prophesy was found by Voldemort shortly after Harry’s birth. It is the reason the dark lord wanted him dead. He sought out Harry’s parents and attempted to kill all three, but when Lily Potter protected Harry out of an act of love, the curse backfired and destroyed Voldemort’s body, only leaving parts of his soul in the Horcruxes. As he gained power he was determined to kill Harry so that the prophesy would not come true. This conflict is resolved when Harry defeats Voldemort and the prophesy comes true.

Person vs nature (external) Harry/Hermoine/Ron vs magical creatures: several times through out the movie they battle against dragons, the weather, etc.

Format for writing an expository essay Introduction: -Include the author, title and definition of either conflict or theme depending on what you are writing on -Include a brief plot summary (what the movie was about) -Include a thesis stating 3 examples of conflict or a theme and three examples of how it is supported.

Interpersonal conflict is a conflict is a struggle between two characters. An example of this conflict is Harry Potter vs Voldemort.
