Back in 2002 Cancer cases in BC rising Without action oncologists would not be able to meet demand Need for primary care to take on more responsibility Better for patients and the system Required a new approach Led to formation of:  Family Practice Oncology Network  GPO Training Program

BC Family Practice Oncology Network “Enhancing cancer care by providing support and connection to physicians in the community” Formed in 2002 by the BC Cancer Agency working with family physicians and oncologists Created effective link between the Agency and primary care Expert Council leads in development of:  GPO Training Program  CME Programs (online, in-person, in communities)  Journal of Family Practice Oncology  Cancer Care Guidelines  Research and Evaluation

GPO Training Program Launched 2004 Aim: every community over 15,000 to have 2 GPOs Strengthen relationships between family physicians and oncologists Provide comprehensive cancer care, improved safety in treatment delivery Local resource for family physicians In-depth, flexible oncology training program 8 weeks: 2 week Introductory Module + 6 weeks Clinical Rotation at closest Cancer Centre Offered twice yearly Unique in Canada, strong interest

Measuring Success Accredited by College of Family Physicians of Canada Participants submit both pre and post evaluations Every speaker receives their evaluation summary Exploring formal evaluation from a decade of experience Telling qualitative feedback 70+ graduates in 35 different communities

Challenges Keeping content current Ensuring relevance to GPO work Meeting growing demand Participants with varied career goals Acceptance of GPO model by some family physicians

Lessons Learned Need for ongoing curriculum and process development Most are organizational or system related – resolved over time Need for education credentialling Access to Agency patient information system and dictation system Need for Accountability
